100-burpee challenge with the guy (I took about double the time he did, and it turns out to be not so bad if you take fifteen minutes), back workout, 2x5 power cleans, 2x5 slow deadlifts.Comments

Where to sleep in LAXComments
My 11:30 pm connecting flight out of Los Angeles International Airport was delayed by 24 hours, forcing me to rest in the airport. All my bags were checked, so I had no luggage or spare clothes available. Here's where I tried sleeping and how it went.
This is the kind of information/story I used to see more often on the web, and it is gold.
I went through a few small airport sleeping experiences, but I was lucky to never come close to a 24-hour delay. These, and trying to find a place to sleep in the Obama for America office in Indianapolis, gave me an understanding of the cold, discomfort, noise, and anxiety ratings she uses in her report. -
I have this Obsidian doc named "Business ideas." I was opening it in a semi-public place earlier, and I found myself afraid that someone would see the title of the doc.Comments
I have two conflicting thoughts in my head:
1. I mean, how else are you going to keep track of business ideas?
2. It is hilarious when a guy has a document named "Business ideas" or "business plan." -
Via Set Side B, Ninja Gaiden - Developer CommentaryComments
Mighty Bomb Jack, the first game I directed after transferring from sales to the development department, was a hit, and so I'd earned the trust of the president, which in turn meant he felt comfortable throwing curveballs my way whenever they presented themselves. One day, I was summoned to his office once more:
This is awesome. If I had the patience to draw a ton of buildings, I’d do this today.
"Ninjas are in vogue in America right now, so make a ninja game! Listen up, I want something that goes ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-taaaaaaaa!"
At that moment, I had mental flashes of a ninja kicking their way up a wall, with a ta-ta-ta-taaaa!-esque tempo. Soon after that meeting, I ordered a ninja magazine from America; that magazine made me realize that the American image of a ninja sat somewhere between sorcery and kung fu, as their merchandise pages featured things like nunchaku alongside shuriken and kusarigama.
…
The game's maps were designed on Tecmo's specialized map paper. For each stage, we'd first decide the total number of horizontal screens for that stage, and then draw the terrain for each screen, with a focus on that up-to-down-to-up stage pathing, as well as maintaining a balance between the visual appeal of the terrain vs. the difficulty of traversal.
Once the terrain was laid out, I decided which enemies would appear and when/where, through the use of a homemade viewfinder: I created a scale out of cardboard with a screen-sized window cut out of the center, which could be slid around the paper map to simulate scrolling. Ryu, the player-character, is locked to the center of the screen, and thus the center of the scale, making it easy to visualize which part of the screen would be visible to the player at any given time.By arranging these tilemaps, it would be possible to create the kinds of backgrounds we were after, and so the programmer was considerate enough to create a "construction mode": pressing the Start button during the game would bring up a 32x32 cursor, which could be moved with the D-pad and cycled in order by pressing A+Up/Down. Once you'd gone though this process and assembled a stage layout, you could press Start once more and Ryu would drop down from the top of the stage, allowing you to test your layout right then and there, which was extremely convenient. (The collision data for the terrain was baked into the 32x32 tilemap.)
I wonder how many other classic game devs had a Mario Maker?By the way, the international title is "NINJA外伝", with "外伝" written as kanji and "GAIDEN" rendered as furigana. That was another idea that came down from the president: "Americans love kanji!".
The story is long and detailed. All of the anecdotes involving the president of Tecmo are great. He’s living caricature, not unlike the president in Pikmin 2. Oh, also, the most Asian salaryman-like sentiment ever appears:
…
To ensure this, I thought it important to connect these scenes to the players' emotions; players' excitement is at its highest immediately upon buying a game, and maintaining their excitement is crucial.I'd only been at the company for around five years at that point, so we talked about how we should both keep giving it our all!

Well, I'm still not thrilled that 30% of smidgeo.com is probable A.I. scrapers that won't self-identify (but aren't bothering to fake a normal browser's user-agent), but it is better than the 70% share of jimkang.com traffic. I don't know if Cloudflare is making the difference, but I'll put it on over there too and see what happens.Comments

The ancient religion of Shugendō promises fresh perspectivesComments
This is a great idea for a religion. In one swift action, faintly reminiscent of a mob boss demanding answers, Otsuka Chimyou picked me up by my thighs and dangled me off a sheer cliff. It occurred to me that, if his grip had failed, or if the hemp rope he had knotted around my torso slipped, the landscape far beneath me might be the last thing I would see. A forest of cypress and cedar, the treetops swaying in the breeze. A buzzard turning on the thermals. A bead of sweat that dropped from my brow into thin air.
This is genius. I wish I had come up with it.
“Do you promise to respect your family?” Otsuka screamed, lurching forward, pretending to drop me. “Yes”
“Do you promise to apply yourself to your career?” he continued, repeating the feint. “Yes” I shouted louder.
His tone remained threatening: “Are you a big boy?’
…
While a great deal is obscure about Shugendō, at its root is a simple premise: that participants (also known as yamabushi) derive power by spending time in the presence of holy mountains. There they will face hardships — tests of courage, perilous climbs or spells without sleep, food and water — which mean they grow in stature or even acquire magical powers. -

I tried to do two things today.Comments
The first was to make an attempt to fix my kitchen sink drip. I started by shutting off the hot and cold water to the faucet, then turning the hot back on, then closing the hot shutoff, then opening the cold shutoff. Roughly 30 seconds after each shutoff opening, a drip started. So it wasn't just the hot handle or just the cold handle.
I tried to remove one of the cartridges and couldn't do it. A book I consulted said "don't be surprised if you have to use extreme force." I went to the hardware store to get a specific cartridge removal tool.
The tool worked by hooking into the cartridge, then having you wind this long bar around to get it embedded into the cartridge so that you could then lever it out.
Our kitchen faucet is right up against the wall, which I hit when I tried to wind the bar.
So, I gave up on that. While I'm not good at plumbing, I am good at getting a tool into its original packaging and folding the staples so it looks like it was never opened. I drove back to the store again and returned the cartridge remover.
On the way back, I tried to fill my tires. One of them had been low for a few weeks. I'm used the air pumps having a pressure gauge built in. This one — in addition to eating eight of my quarters and giving me nothing before I switched to credit — didn't have that.
The car has a built-in pressure gauge for each tire that appears when you're driving, so I don't keep a pressure gauge with me. So, I just plugged the pump in and guessed at pressure by eye.
When I drove away, the onboard tire pressure view showed that two tires were at 60 psi. They're supposed to be at 36.
So, I pulled over immediately, got out, pushed in the release valve and counted to 30 for each one. You have to drive for a little bit for the tire pressures to show, so I started driving again, and saw they were at 55 and 45.
I repeated this process four more times until I got back down to normal tire pressures.
So, I got at least one thing done today. -

He was doing an average 8 dmg. per attack. It is painful but fascinating to watch someone with no cultural knowledge of the genre play FF1. -
