I guess one upside of being recently underemployed is that I'll have plenty of time to do 7DRL if I want. It's in three days; I'm somehow always surprised when it rolls around.Comments

Taiwan catches Chinese-owned ship in act of cutting subsea cableComments
I imagined specialized equipment used to do this, but apparently, all you have to do is drag an anchor. After the ship failed to respond to seven consecutive radio messages asking it to leave, the coastguard dispatched a vessel and discovered that the freighter had lowered its anchor.
If Russia takes Ukrainian territory, Taiwan's going to endure a lot more of this kind of thing.
When the coastguard arrived, the freighter began to move. Shortly after, the coastguard received notice from Chunghwa Telecom, the state-owned operator, that a cable had been damaged. -

Nigerians are building affordable alternatives to AWS and Google CloudComments
I have to admit, it never even occurred to me that you could compete with Amazon/Microsoft/Google cloud services. The currency angle is a nice wedge. -

I had to call Verizon again to stop them from increasing our bill, which I called about last month. Their explanation about why it was bumped up is that I misunderstood the resolution of the last call. Our bill would go back to the original price after one month of the increased price. So, next month, it will go back down.Comments
I'm sure I won't have to call again next month.
It is really nice that I have choices here, though. There's Comcast, which is cheaper but an invitation to suffering, but also Earthlink, which somehow still exists. - Comments

The problem with assassinating Putin is that rule would then be assumed by someone just like him. That’s not true of every head of state. So, in a way, making sure people just below you on the pyramid are just like you — sort of commodifying yourself — is a really good security measure.Comments

The assassination part of this story about assassination attempts among the political elite in Uzbekistan is interesting, but the fact that the country has a “ruling family” that is above the law and warps the economy is a glimpse into our possible future.Comments

I found out from my dad that if President Yoon is convicted of insurrection (which he will be), there are only two possible sentences for him: life in prison without parole or death.Comments
The military leadership that went along with his illegal martial law order will get a minimum of five years in prison.
Goddamn I'm jealous.
Trump wiggled his way out of everything and is now spraying illegal executive orders everywhere, and people in the federal government have no idea how to react to them. There aren't specific laws about some of these situations because, once again, we've never had a president do things like grant access to the Treasury to some guy that donated a lot to his campaign.
Life in Korea is incredibly hard in many ways, but because they've faced coups, corruption, and persecution of political opposition before, they have explicit laws dealing with most of those situations.
Here, maybe we'll learn from this, maybe we won't. -

A passive speaker (also referred to as a receptive bilingual or passive bilingual) is a category of speaker who has had enough exposure to a language in childhood to have a native-like comprehension of it, but has little or no active command of it.[1] Passive fluency is often brought about by being raised in one language (which becomes the person's passive language) and being schooled in another language (which becomes the person's native language).[2][3]
I didn't know there was a term for this! It is sort of contradictory, though, as the passive speaker doesn't speak much. -

Wow, Bolsonaro’s coup attempt was a lot scarier than Trump’s. An assassination and the military was involved. OTOH, Bolsonaro is actually getting charged with it, unlike Trump.Comments

I got the car stuck in the snow on the street near the library while trying to park. It's very densely packed, so traction is especially low. But I was able to do my usual "moving forward then moving backward repeatedly" escape. After I got out, I noticed another guy with a full-sized van was stuck.Comments
The driver had just moved here last week. He had Missouri plates. I remember minor disasters like this happening to me on my first week in Massachusetts, too.
He was trying to dig out behind his wheels with some wooden shims, which were not very effective, but they were was the best he had.
I suggested backing up because that direction was downhill. He realized there was more space behind him than he thought, so he tried it and moved a few inches but got stuck on the snow mound behind one of his front wheels again. I tried pushing, but not much progress was made.
So, I suggested the tried and true repeated back-and-forth rolling tactic. I left to go inside the library and told him he could get me if he needed an extra pair of hands. I'd only walked about fifty feet when he drove out of the rut and down the street.
So, take hard, icy snow seriously, is the lesson, I guess!
