The blogger writing about staying at the South Polehas returned to the US.Comments
We all lived, for an entire winter, just a few hundred feet from the actual, geographic South Pole. Literally any time I wanted to, I could go outside and touch it. It was easy! It was right there! Only ~1,700 people, in the history of forever, have ever had the experience of wintering over at the South Pole. It was 100°F below zero! It was pitch black! We were doing world-changing science! We were thousands of miles from civilization!
Most of us were very much over it. We were desensitized to the sheer mind-boggling novelty of where we were. We went about our daily routines, and the unique context faded into the background. We sat around in our pajamas, sipping tea, playing board games. The most interesting topic of conversation is whether there would be tater tots at breakfast tomorrow.
But in these last few days, I did my best to recapture the magic of where I was. I walked around station, inside and out. I paid attention to the little details and the unique things I could only do here.
For example, here’s a quick walk around the geographic South Pole, in which I hit every longitudinal value over the course of 37 seconds. -
The guy: We need a calculator that converts vulgar fractions into decimal fractions.Comments

I almost forgot this dream I had a few days ago. Like all dreams, it’s not that interesting, yet almost forgetting it and then remembering it makes me want to write it down.Comments
I was flying at night in an open one-person helicopter. I was following a river, and then there was a big fork coming up.
Somehow, the river had some influence on where the helicopter went. So, I had to make this big turn at the right time, like hitting a railway switch, and I was elated when I made it.
Shortly afterward, I was like why did I care? I’m in a helicopter. I can go in any direction.
I went past Illinois, and to the west of Illinois was Michigan somehow. I got worried that I wasn’t going the right way to my destination. Also that I didn’t know what my destination was.
I think I woke up after that. Maybe the most significant aspect of that dream was that my brain really cranked up the “you really are flying” vibe.
Then last night, I dreamed that Bonus Cat was lost. I went into the basement and ended up in my old condo’s basement. There were three huge (3’ long) rats with blood-matted fur. I froze, and they froze. The dream ended in that standoff as far as I know. -
Ab stuff, junior calisthenics, taking throws for the guy, newaza drills, 13 pull-ups. It’s rainy; I guess I could run, but I’m choosing laziness.Comments
We worked on morote seoinage, which is a nice alternative to ippon seoinage because it’s a little easier to do if your opponent has a grip on the arm holding their lapel. (Though it still won’t work if your opponent has a robo-strength grip.) A small nicetie is that you don’t have to change your own grip — you keep it on the lapel and sleeve.
That said, I never really got it to work back when I did judo, and I think it was the focus on getting your elbow this video warns about. It makes sense; it drives the opponent back, in addition to telegraphing what you’re doing, among other things.
Mostly, we tried it not for standing, but because the guy said he feels he has very few openings when starting from kneeling positions in newaza. He always goes for the butterfly sweep and that’s it. You can do a modified version of morote seoinage (or ippon seoinage) from kneeling by posting your foot by the opponent’s knee, then just doing the rest. -
On the off-chance that you want to see piano students perform, there’s a live stream going at Tufts all day. Some of the older kids are really good.Comments

I was trying to follow a solution from Quinten to a problem about summing probability amplitudes and was tripped up by a part that goes from the second to the third equation here. After a lot of pondering, I gave up, then asked her about it at the meeting.Comments
It turned out I misread a minus sign next to a fraction as being part of the fraction line, so that the fraction was multiplying the rest of it instead the fraction begin subtracted from the rest of it. -
Re: advancing your point of view by squeezing framing into tight spaces: I said the guy could have an extra ten minutes of screen time because I accidentally wiped ten minutes of progress from his game. His reply? “Wow, thanks! You’re normally not that reasonable!”Comments

We started watching Scavengers Reign last night. I'd heard it was good and that it was animated, but I didn't expect to be kind of rough. It is in a good way. It definitely looks like people drew it.Comments
As a result, it sort of looked like Sealab 2021 to us at first, even though it's serious show.
Here's all the things it reminded us of:
- Adventure Time (amazingly, Maeby from Arrested Development plays a robot that sounds like NEPTR)
- FenslerFilms GI Joe shorts
- Hilda
- Slay the Spire
- Star Wars throwaway scenes with space animals
It's packed to the brim with weird creatures eating each other, which is always some combination of gross and hilarious. It's sort of like MAD Magazine margin comics running all the time, except more arty.
The plot seems decent, but more importantly, the vibe is unique, and there's a lot to watch, whether it's important to the plot or not.
