New album: Let's Have Fun Why NotComments
I took a break from working on Flooding to finish these songs (which you may have heard as demos) and put out something traditionally considered fun. Because I think everyone can use a break. -

Ken Thompson closing keynote. Apple dunk at that timestamp, but I'm into how the inventor of C and Unix just showed up at this open source conference and just decided he's going to talk about his 75-year-old music collection and the various formats and players he's had. Talk starts around 10:00.Comments

I've seen the name "boguslaw" over the years and assumed it was some anti-law internet handle. It's actually a Slavic name!Comments

Sisters with Transistors is on Kanopy. You can usually get free access it to it via your library in the US.Comments
It’s really well done. It never sunk in how early these women were working. Eliane Radigue started in the ‘50s, and that’s not far from the beginning of magnetic tape recording. That’s eighty years ago. -
Bitwig seems to have this evil bug (behavior?) in which removing a file from a launcher clip, then putting an update file in with the same name as before does not change the actual audio. Maybe it's a caching mistake? You have to delete and recreate the entire audio track for the update audio to get into the clip.Comments
Anyway, if it's a subtle update, these things make you doubt your own hearing. -
I prompted ChatGPT with this:Comments
How do I put a fade out on the master track in bitwig studio?
The response:To put a fade-out effect on the master track in Bitwig Studio, you can follow these steps:
Plausible! But Bitwig does not have a Volume Shaper effect. There's a third-party VST named that, though. Before I was thinking that it was easy to check ChatGPT's facts so it was worth using, but it is actually a bit of a hassle.
Click on the "Master" track in the mixer to select it.
Click on the "FX" button on the Master track header to open the FX panel.
In the FX panel, click on the "+" icon to add a new effect.
Select the "Volume Shaper" effect from the list of available effects.
Click and drag the Volume Shaper effect onto the Master track's effect chain.
In the Volume Shaper effect's window, click on the "Draw" button to enter Draw Mode.
Use the Draw tool to draw a fade-out curve at the end of the song.
Adjust the curve as needed to achieve the desired fade-out effect.
Exit Draw Mode and close the Volume Shaper effect's window.
You can now play your project and hear the fade-out effect on the Master track. -

Huh, Replit threatened an intern.Comments
And then just to put a cherry on top, Replit sent me another email reminding me that they just raised $20 million from their investors last month, and they weren’t afraid to use it against me. The “me” in question being one of their previous interns who just graduated from college a year ago, and who isn’t running any kind of commercial operation whatsoever.

Custom AI chatbots are quietly becoming the next big thing in fandomComments
A search for tweets about Character.AI will quickly reveal that some young, vulnerable users are trying to get their favorite characters to coach them into self-harming or giving them rules for their eating disorders. This is certainly one of the outcomes that Character.AI hopes to use its filters to avoid — given that its claimed goal is to “give everyone on earth access to their own deeply personalized superintelligence that helps them live their best lives.” (Character.AI’s representative did not respond to requests for comment about how they plan to improve their filters to prevent these types of uses.)
The filter is imperfect — in our tests, an AI asked explicit self-harm questions might type out a fully visible violent answer before the filter kicks in and hides it, for example. And users are endlessly creative, as experiments like ChatGPT’s “Do Anything Now” hacked mode show, so it is always possible that the bots will be put to dangerous uses.
It seems like these companies are constantly pouring months or years into building huge models that they purport to be sophisticated, then “making them safe” with a simple filters they spend a couple days on.
I guess you can say the same with Twitter and YouTube building ways to spread content at massive scale, then slapping on some afterthought safety measures that don’t do much. -
I have to say, ChatGPT is good at questions like "Why can't I drag audio clips directly to the arranger view in Bitwig Studio?"Comments
It responded with this:It's possible that you are experiencing this issue because you are trying to drag audio clips from the browser directly to the arranger view without first dragging them to a track. In Bitwig Studio, audio clips must first be dragged to a track and then placed in the arranger view.
Both Duck Duck Go and Google gave me results that may have implied that, and I may have picked that up if I carefully read, but this was way easier.
Of course, this is a case in which what it finds via looking through things statistically "similar" with the question can easily be verified or disproven. This is not, "Will vaccines give my kid autism?" or a question of that sort. - Comments

Sometimes, you need to record yourself to remember you don't sound as good as you think you do. Felt good while playing, thought I might be able to get Raining Blood right and record it for posterity. (Someday, I'm going to have arthritis.) Yeah, still needs work, even after (admittedly on and off) decades of work!Comments

Sometimes fishers climb up a tree after a porcupine and crowd it to the edge of a branch until it falls to the ground. Or a cornered porcupine may press its vulnerable head against a tree, exposing only its quills. Most other predators give up at this point, but a fisher has ankles that rotate 180 degrees. So it jumps onto the tree trunk, faces down and attacks the porcupine’s head from above. A fisher that finds a porcupine in the open will run in circles around it until the porcupine exhausts itself spinning around trying to expose its quills to the fisher.
Fishers are in the weasel family, BTW. - Comments

I’ve been doing PT exercised for two days, which are all gentle stretches. But my legs feel wrecked! I stopped working and took a bath to try to relax the muscles a bit. I guess they’re really not used to the stretches.Comments
