Remembering a White Supremacist Coup
I think it is worth taking 35 minutes or so to listen to the first story in the podcast. It’s about 1898 in Wilmington, NC. Black people were elected to office and in government positions as a result of winning over the White farmer vote.
White supremacists saw this as humiliating, much like today’s populists and conservatives saw Obama’s election. The tactics they used to claw the control back from democracy are strikingly
similar to the tactics they use today.
