Here’s my Halloween playlist. I’ve been listening to it this week. It’s got funny stuff but also spooky stuff, which I think matches the character of Halloween.

Well, I got peer auth (the kind in which the Unix identity is used, so auth can be entirely key-based) working from my app to PostgreSQL but not between pgadmin and PostgreSQL. Had to give up and use a password for that one.
Now I can cautiously say my app can do stuff with the database, and I can inspect it in pgadmin4’s GUI. Configuration problems are way less satisfying than programming ones, but sometimes actually more important.
Also, I have become reacquainted with why Google can charge millions to big companies so that developers can just hit a button in some GCP web page to get all of this instantly. -
Nominal workout again: 12 pull-ups. Today’s excuse is that I working until 4 AM last night and am not well-stocked on the willpower.

It is hard to be Borat.

Remembering a White Supremacist Coup
I think it is worth taking 35 minutes or so to listen to the first story in the podcast. It’s about 1898 in Wilmington, NC. Black people were elected to office and in government positions as a result of winning over the White farmer vote.
White supremacists saw this as humiliating, much like today’s populists and conservatives saw Obama’s election. The tactics they used to claw the control back from democracy are strikingly similar to the tactics they use today. -

I’ve been really trying to stay off the keyboard today, given that in spite of weeks of remediation, my wrists still feel crunchy at times during the day. There is much less pain than there was several weeks ago, at least, but I’d like to get to “zero concern” before pushing it seven days a week. Failing some input revolution, I do need to type for the rest of my life, after all.
I was (unreasonably) ambivalent about doing this because I only got seven hours in this week on my product and most of it was spent on learning how to configure PostgreSQL in a repeatable way. (I usually use LevelDB for my persistent storage needs, but the inspection tools for at are far worse that Postgres’s, so I decided to finally switch. I don’t really care too much about KV vs. relational DBs in many situations.)
Once I got into it, though, it wasn’t at all hard to stay away from the keyboard. I did stuff with the guy, cooked stuff, chatted with friends, and drew things. I feel kinda refreshed. I should probably do this regularly. -
