I got paid today for an art commission that I submitted a proposal for back April. The broker (for lack of a better word) expressed interest at the end of May and asked me to make and submit more work, which I did.
My art was selected at the end of September. And now, two and a half months later, I've been paid. That's a long turnaround time!
I am guessing that works were less laborious than most artists' because I produced them
programmatically. However, producing the additional works (which they ultimately were not interested in) and getting it into the format they wanted easily took 30 hours. The pay was $900 for three images. If you included the time I took to write the program I used to generate the images, the hourly pay for that would end up around $10/hour, I think.
As we all know, it would be (and is) hard to live as a professional artist.
