Sonny found proof in the most unlikely of places, in David Livingston’s Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, for example, where there were descriptions of African villages which were complete unto themselves—a census which listed barbers, doctors, weavers, blacksmiths,
priests, carpenters. It was the sheer ordinariness of it that struck him;
black people living complete, normal lives without white people.
It is really sad to be so oppressed (this was in the ‘40s in the US) as to be blown away by this.
