The Boston School Committee tried to change the distribution of access to the three exam schools (which get a grossly disproportionate amount of funding). The plan was to admit those with the best grades in each zip code, instead of test scores, which richer kids can afford to prepare for specifically, in addition to having generally better educational resources. Those kids often go to private school until it’s time to go to Boston Latin.
A group of White and Asian parents had a shit fit about this and sued. I had just assumed they’d win because the most selfish busybodies always win these local fights.
They actually lost! The bigger overall problem, though, is helping the kids with average or worse grades in each zip code. Giving up on educating kids that aren’t as easy to educate has lead to the current inequities and the weak condition of democracy.
