Ticking off another session of my favorite stuff that I 60% think works/40% have doubts: ab stuff and back stuff.Comments

After switching to a Firefox I installed myself (by downloading and installing instead of using Flatpak, which once had a version with a tiny cursor bug), I had to create the Ubuntu launcher shortcut myself.Comments
No big deal; those are .ini files not unlike the Windows shortcuts of yore (and maybe now?). At some point, Firefox disappeared from the launcher, and I had to launch it by typing `firefox` in a terminal.
I finally decided on looking into this, and after the fourth "change something, log out, log back in" attempt, there was no progress. Then I saw there was a `NoDisplay=true` line in the .desktop file.
Sure enough, that hides the shortcut from the launcher. So, I got it back in the launcher, but I have no idea how `NoDisplay` got in there. Maybe I was copying another .desktop file that had something I wanted? It is a mystery. -

The directors of Pikmin 4 say “dandori”32 times in this interview. Dandori (段取り) means the same thing as planning as far as I can tell. They chose not to translate it to planning in the English versions of the games, which does make it seem like it might be a unique concept.Comments
What do they do in the Japanese versions? Just bold the text or something? -

Played some gin rummy with the guy. He did understand without being told that it was a race to knock leaving the other players in a bad situation, rather than a quest to get all of your cards into sets. I think these games come across less abstractly than I always assume they will.Comments

Jeff Hawkins cut a block of wood to fit the overall size of the envisioned product and printed out a simple user interface, like the one he envisioned. He taped the printout over the wooden block and used a wooden chopstick as the stylus. This was rough enough that it only took hours to create. He then carried it around in his pocket at work for months to determine the desirability of the value proposition in the real world.
Regardless of utility, this technique rules.
When someone asked for a meeting or email, he would pull the wood block out of his pocket, tap on it with the chopstick and then put it away.
After several instances when he felt it would've been useful to have the real product, only then did he decide to go forward with the product development of the Palm Pilot. -
We went to the pool, and the water was cool. I found that reassuring because last week, when we went to the pool in South Carolina, the water was warm.Comments
The air temperature was about the same as is now here in Massachusetts — a bit over 90°F. The overnight lows were in the 70s. (This isn’t attributable to climate change; that’s the average for this time of year in Columbia.) However, they’re about the same here this week.
Our water source, the Quabbin Reservoir has a water temperature of 70°F today. Columbia has two water sources.
Broad River is has a water temperature of 86 °F today which seems to be a record, but only by two degrees, according to that page. I’m guessing it was about the same last week.
Lake Murray was 29.6°C (85.46 °F) last week.
So it seems that the water supply is just close to body temperature there all the time, despite me thinking it was a climate change thing.
That doesn’t explain to me why the tap water wasn’t warm. Explain this, some government web site! -
Because the earlier porch pirating incident, I went to Kohl’s to buy new shoes in person. I try to always buy the same shoes, but they’re now $90! Smidgeo!Comments
Also, they didn’t have my size, so I bought a different kind that was cheaper.
Then, I went to Wegman’s, where and old lady asked me where the Pringles were. How would I know? But I decided to take this incidental quest, and I did find where the potato chips were by looking at the aisle signs.
I thought of this as the equivalent of a “let me Google that for you” task, but if you Google something lately, there’s a chance you’ll find something fake that made to trick Google.
A grocery stole equivalent would be a misleading aisle sign that has potato chips made from shredded paper. That would be a real challenge! -
Got up with no back issues today! Instead, side hip tightness, which I’ll gladly take. I took a lot of breaks to lie down yesterday in which I stretched while I was there. Maybe it helped.Comments
Learn from my curse and do not move furniture in a rushed manner multiple times in a summer! -
Had to ask the fence guys a third time to fix the gate latch since they put it in the winter. To their credit, they came out to fix it twice. To their…debit, it keeps breaking the same way because they put metal screws in very soft wood.Comments

It took a tremendous effort to distinguish early Christianity from the finely tuned world of pagan beliefs and ritualsComments
It is important to note that in the 4th century when he wrote, the notion of a super-demon, that is Satan or ‘the Devil’, had not yet developed. Until the high Middle Ages (c1050-1200) Satan was just one more demon, albeit a particularly nasty one.
Promotion!
There’s some interesting stuff in there about Christians struggling to make their brand stand out and landing on their religion being the “indoor one,” where you do your stuff inside, away from demons, whereas the other ones did everything outside, presumably with demons. -
