Crows and Magpies Are Building Nests with Anti-Bird SpikesComments
A paper published this month in Deinsea highlights several examples of magpies and carrion crows building nests with strips of anti-bird spikes in both Rotterdam and Antwerp. Magpies are particularly enterprising and use pointed edges for their original purpose: many have lined the roofs of their homes with the spikes to deter predators from snatching eggs.

This episode of Past Present Future just changed my mind about Thoreau being a fool.Comments
For one, he put his himself on the line for the Underground Railroad. And a larger point Runciman makes about Thoreau is that he’s hypocritical in ways that’s easy to make fun of, like saying you’re isolating at Walden Pond while going to your mom’s house every week to get your clothes washed. However, that doesn’t mean you should dismiss his ideas about abolition and civil disobedience, the same way you can’t dismiss the Extinction Rebellion message just because the people participating in it are comfortable middle class people who use air conditioning and eat nice food. They’re still right — climate change will still make life miserable unless big changes in industry happen. We’ll suffer whether or not those protestors have street cred. -
If the US had never stolen Texas from Mexico, would we be Texas-free right now? Or would Oklahoma take that role? If it did, though, I can’t see it garnering as many people and electoral votes.Comments

When someone prefaces a statement that they’re just “blunt”, they’re usually about to say something that’s wrong and hoping people will think “That’s blunt!” instead of “that’s wrong.”Comments

I was just looking at someone's GitHub repos and saw one with "crypto" in the name and was like, ah too bad. I actually looked in it, and it's code for actual *cryptography*, the old forgotten original crypto!Comments

In August 2006, Perelman was offered the Fields Medal[4] for "his contributions to geometry and his revolutionary insights into the analytical and geometric structure of the Ricci flow", but he declined the award, stating: "I'm not interested in money or fame; I don't want to be on display like an animal in a zoo."[5]
Dag!On 18 March 2010, it was announced that he had met the criteria to receive the first Clay Millennium Prize[7] for resolution of the Poincaré conjecture. On 1 July 2010, he rejected the prize of one million dollars, saying that he considered the decision of the board of the Clay Institute to be unfair, in that his contribution to solving the Poincaré conjecture was no greater than that of Richard S. Hamilton, the mathematician who pioneered the Ricci flow partly with the aim of attacking the conjecture.[8][9]
Definitely not all talk.In 2005, Perelman abruptly quit his research job at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics, and in 2006 stated that he had quit professional mathematics, due to feeling disappointed over the ethical standards in the field. He lives in seclusion in Saint Petersburg, and has not accepted offers for interviews since 2006.
Uh, oh? Hopefully not.The writer Brett Forrest briefly interacted with Perelman in 2012.[64][65] A reporter who had called him was told: "You are disturbing me. I am picking mushrooms."[66]
Perelman has style. -
Steely & Clevie’s 228-page complaint, the first version of which was filed in 2021, had traced the trajectory through which nearly all of Reggaeton allegedly appropriated elements from derivative versions of the original Fish Market.Comments
I don’t know enough about reggaeton to know about the merits of the case, but I did assume their riddims were really generic. Having just listened to a bit of Fish Market, though, they are very distinctive, so I at least see how they might be traced from song to song. -

This unfortunately reminds me of the first few chapters of The Ministry for the Future. (Which is all I read of it. I was told the rest wasn’t good, though.) -
Back was a little worse than yesterday. I wonder if it’s just coming from cumulative time spent at the computer. So, I went for a walk instead of running. 12 pull-ups.Comments

wellifyouinsist has been posting a dungeon synth album as she makes it. She just posted the last song. It's very good. It feels very handcrafted and sort of on the comfy synth side of things.Comments

Heh, the Boston DSA wanted to have a trial to expel one of its only two state representatives for cooperating with liberals. Connolly, the congressman, decided to just quit the DSA. Who knows what was behind that, but I suspect it was the DSA translating extremely online behavior to real life.Comments

Welp, there were two groundhogs in the backyard. That is officially crossing the line. We’re going to have dump cat litter at the border or something.Comments
Don’t raise a family here, groundhogs! There was a stabbing at Medford High School, and it is very hard to evaluate the situation; go to Newton or something.
