Blitzortung.org! Seeing lightning that blasts the earth every second or so is nice. I think it actually does more often than that, but there's only so many stations, and I don't think their distribution is even.Comments

India’s religious AI chatbots are speaking in the voice of god — and condoning violenceComments
One of the promises of religion is finding appealing answers. But answers that come from “somewhere else”. And so, you often have an ambiguous source for answers and often an agent of some sort to interpret the answers.
Why can’t this agent be ML? Well, among other reasons, humans are often more hesitant to hand out murder licenses than layered statistical models are, even though many counterexamples will probably jump to mind. -

Ab and stretching PT stuff. Almost skipped, but then I remember I did a total of five hours of walking this weekend, and I do not want to dip below my current health standard: Being able to sit in an office chair all day without pain. And of course, I’ve got my stretch goal (ha) in mind: Having a day in which the sides of my legs feel loose enough that I don’t feel like I’m doing something risky by running.Comments

I forgot to put the egg/soy sauce/wine/vodka mixture into the batter. This made it adhere less to the chicken and flake off into the oil, turning it into sludge that kept cooking less and less effectively with each batch that went into the wok. Eventually, it accumulated at the bottom and burned.Comments
The chicken did turn out edible and not bad, but not crispy.
So, I think I have to take the complexity of the breaded chicken more seriously next time. I may even need a written checklist. I could also stand to do the optional step where you lay each batter-dipped piece out on a tray so you know they’re separated.
Or! I could find some kind of high quality pre-cooked fried chicken, if it exists. Most of why I’m doing this is because the guy really enjoys takeout orange chicken as well as the frozen orange chicken sold by Trader Joe’s.
We eat the Trader Joe’s stuff every week because it’s nice for everyone for him to have at least two non-challenging meals a week. Unfortunately, I now notice the low chicken quality in the Trader Joe’s offering and kind of can’t take it anymore. On the other hand, I’m not sure that making stuff by hand will ever be a non-ordeal. -

Ah, the post was removed because some regex thought I was disguising a link. They should probably just prevent you from posting instead if it thinks that.Comments

I read this 59-page report about Medford High School. Friday night woo!Comments
Looking at my notes, I'm not sure if I have any answers. They made a few bad decisions, but a lot of those were forced by not having enough funding. Which is a bit surprising. The elementary schools do not look underfunded, so I guess distribution in uneven.
This sort of correlates with the fact that Medford loses students as they get older fairly consistently. For example, a cohort of 426 kindergarteners that started in 2009 became 291 HS seniors in 2021. -

Today's Bandcamp Friday purchases were wacky:Comments
- Dave Lombardo's drum solo album
- TWRP's single, funky, fun, and vocoded as always.
- Curta'n Wall — Siege Ubsessed! despite the tags on it, it sounds like Fintroll-ish folk metal to me, with that interesting raw+joyful vibe combo.
- The Dalai Dalí Dolly Folly (Super Deluxe Edition) Short songs are about the words in the album title with Weird Al-like vocals. In addition to being a good page in the music Library of Babel, it is a good listen!
Non-Bandcamp albums:
- Saint-Saens Moreceau de Concert, plus Other Stuff. It's a good rendition, and I got this from Presto, hoping the Czech Philharmonic gets some money.
- The Baba Is You soundtrack! It's good puzzling music for puzzles outside the game, too. -
I tried buying some classical music from Presto Music. Look at the nightmare directory structure for this:Comments
Concertino\ in\ E\ Minor\ -\ Strauss\ -\ Horn\ Concerto\ in\ C\ Minor\ -\ Saint-Saens\ -\ Morceau\ de\ concert\ -\ Schumann\ -\ Concertstuck/Weber\ -\ Concertino\ in\ E\ Minor\ -\ Strauss\ -\ Horn\ Co
A four-way split EP is always a tough case, but they could do better than this.
