I noticed that some of my music and audio recordings are only in one place — a local hard drive. So, I thought, OK I'll back this up to S3 the way I back up stuff on my cloud VPS to S3.Comments
But of course, it's been an hour, and it's still not working. Just installing the AWS CLI took half an hour. Then, there was time understanding my old bash scripts.
No conclusions here other than "Technology amirite" -
The end of the hazardous waste drama: I didn’t have enough cash nor checks, so I was turned away. But the DPW person let me know I could throw away the battery on normal days at the DPW, and that the paint could be dried out and chucked. I forgot to ask about the TV!Comments
I now know that going to hazardous waste disposal can put you into a captive situation. That’s all I’ve gotten out of this. -
This setup where you drive the hazardous waste and are not allowed to get out of your car is messed up. People without a car are unable to dispose of hazardous waste.Comments

High drama: Will the Department of Public Works hazardous waste guys take this crappy $10 TV I got a few weeks ago? I feel legitimate suspense.Comments

Drawings around broken porcelain plates.Comments
I think these are great. But also I realized I scrolled through them in thirty seconds.
Putting aside the art-rich-guy-industrial complex, this is why artists want to get into museums. -
I guess I never really thought about all the cameras in a Tesla.Comments
Also shared: crashes and road-rage incidents. One crash video in 2021 showed a Tesla driving at high speed in a residential area hitting a child riding a bike, according to another ex-employee. The child flew in one direction, the bike in another. The video spread around a Tesla office in San Mateo, California, via private one-on-one chats, “like wildfire,” the ex-employee said.

PT back exercises, 14 pull-ups.Comments
I’ve “graduated” from PT sessions. My physical therapist said I didn’t need anymore sessions yesterday. But I guess I have to do these exercises in perpetuity. -
Today's ChatGPT foible: I used this prompt: "Summarize Summarize https://jimkang.com/weblog/articles/no-ramps-for-playback-rate/"Comments
So, it goes looking for what it has in its model for what's similar to that. (Similar to the actual post's text? Similar to the URL? It can't tell us.) And here's what it come up with:The article discusses the recent controversy surrounding the playback speed feature on popular media platforms, such as YouTube and Netflix. The author argues that the current debate over whether to allow users to adjust the playback speed of videos misses the point of the issue. They suggest that the real problem lies in the lack of accessibility options for disabled users, such as closed captioning and audio descriptions. The author notes that these features are essential for many people to fully engage with media, and that the current focus on playback speed ignores the needs of these users. The article concludes by calling for media platforms to prioritize accessibility and to work towards making their content available to all users, regardless of their abilities.
tl;dr It is NOT at all about that. -
Clarence Thomas Secretly Accepted Luxury Trips From Major GOP DonorComments
“If Justice Thomas received free travel on private planes and yachts, failure to report the gifts is a violation of the disclosure law,” said Kedric Payne, senior director for ethics at the nonprofit government watchdog Campaign Legal Center. (Thomas himself once reported receiving a private jet trip from Crow, on his disclosure for 1997.)
I have this defensive pessimism that helps me avoid getting disappointed about things which makes me want to say nothing will happen, but this does seem like really blatant lawbreaking that has a chance of becoming something. -
All right. I did my job research; there wasn't as much to do as I thought. The rare "less work than expected" situation!Comments

From QED:Comments
The next question is, will you understand what I'm going to tell you? Everybody who comes to a scientific lecture knows they are not going to understand it, but maybe the lecturer has a nice, colored tie to look at. Not in this case! (Feynman is not wearing a tie.)
I like how honest Richard Feynman is. And when he’s talking about he himself not understanding quantum electrodynamics, he means that he doesn’t understand *why* it is the way it is. He understands the how.
What I am going to tell you about is what we teach our physics students in the third or fourth year of graduate school--and you think I'm going to explain it to you so you can understand it? No, you're not going to be able to understand it. Why, then, am I going to bother you with all this? Why are you going to sit here all this time, when you won't be able to understand what I am going to say? It is my task to convince you not to turn away because you don't understand it. You see, my physics students don't understand it either. That is because I don't understand it. Nobody does. -
