I tried cooking the blood juice that pools at the bottom of meat packages that you get from the grocery store. I thought there was a tiny, tiny chance I could independently figure out how blood pudding is made.

It smelled terrible! I stopped. But now that I think about it, maybe blood pudding smells terrible.

So my idea that the delicious juice in steaks is mostly cooked blood may be wrong. There’s probably more going on there.

The new Journal app that comes with iOS 17.2 is basically Jotunheim (and a jillion other journal apps), except done super slickly by a team at Apple.

Jotunheim is an app I released in 2011. For many reasons, it did not take off. I think I set the price at $2. It had a total lifetime revenue of around $30.

I made it without bothering to do any research about whether anyone would want it. I just assumed that because I wanted it, thousands of others would, too.

Apple most certainly did research into this before starting development. I do wonder what they found out, either in terms of existing demand or demand they could create and what leverage it will provide them.

I spent literally hours looking at guitar parts today. Annoying, but I didn't see any way around it. I ended up getting this kit (includes a body and a neck) and a hardware set. I'm not a fan of the gold hardware and feel doubtful about the pickups in the set, but it seems the least likely to lead to total unplayability. The thing that kills me is that it won't ship until after Christmas.

I shopped around for individual pieces of hardware and pre-wired pick guards (that include pickups). I didn't want to risk the hardware not fitting and wasn't sure that the pickups in pre-wired pick guards under $50 were actually better than what's in the Guitar Fabric set. Bad pickups and wiring can be very annoying, but I figure I should first see if I like fretless guitar, even with bad pickups before pouring too much into this. If I do, I can go back to researching pickups and upgrading.

The way I was originally going to try fretless was by buying an OK guitar, removing the frets, and filling the gaps with epoxy. A basic OK guitar now seems to cost $400 minimum, and I could imagine myself damaging the fingerboard during one of the 21 times I remove a fret.

Getting a custom fretless built seems to cost $800 minimum.

I thought about getting this possibly not-well-built fretless on eBay, but I find Les Pauls uncomfortable.

So it's going to be a lot of assembling for me in 2024!

Given that so many pieces of this come together at right angles, I don’t know how much chiseling out rough jaggies matters, but I think it does. I’d hit the corners with a hammer, but I’m afraid of it coming apart entirely.

The chicken roasted up pretty well! The skin got overdone which is a bummer, but everything else had the right amount of moisture. The carrots were especially good.

I think the dry brining (AKA rubbing with salt) was the major difference from last time. Also, the temp. 425°F is too much.

The guy said it was “actually pretty good” which is basically a Michelin star.

Epoxy test started! I put a thick-ish layer on the small pomelo piece and a probably too thin layer on the bigger one.

Findings so far: My glove has a hole in it, and my finger got epoxied.

I saw that the NOAA reports North American Total Electron Content (US Region) every fifteen minutes, and I thought this meant they somehow knew how to count all of the electrons in the US. It seems to actually be a density-based estimate, which is less exciting.
