I went to meet up with a former colleague, and I had no idea how businessy the meeting is going to be. Turned out to be very businessy! Not uninteresting, though, and it was nice to get out.Comments

An interview with Tom Moutlton, who came up with disco mixes (though, maybe others did, too?):Comments
Then I went to a couple of discotheques, and I noticed how people were really starting to get into music, in a different way than I had ever realised; and I noticed how, towards the end of a record, people would really start to get into it and then, for some strange reason, they’d lose it, because another record would come on, or two records would be playing at the same time. So I figured, God, if people get off that much on music, there’s got to be a way to take them from where that peak is at the end of a record, and hold them, and take them up another level.
He has a quantitative update on the state of computers at the tune:
I started fooling around technically with tapes at home, and I finally got one place to try one of my tapes. I noticed that by doing edits, and by using parts of the actual record over again, like the instrumental break, people would yell and there’d be an emotional reaction. I just wanted to make people get off on the music, or at least extend that feeling that they had at the end of a record. Say I do a forty-five minute set; you start your records off at one level, and try to build up to a peak. When I do a mix, I try to take that whole forty-five minute trip and put it into one record. You start here, and then by the time the record is over you have them up at the ceiling. The use of computer mixes still isn’t perfected yet; the computer can perform two hundred and twenty functions, and we’re only using about three percent of its total capabilities.
He also talks about changing the speed of recordings, and I thought, how did they avoid changing pitch with analogue equipment? They didn’t. Pretty bold.
Also, disco is a bassy music, but he liked to roll the bass off of the bass guitar and gave that space to the kick drum. I guess punchiness is more important than bassiness in disco. -
Dag, T tickets expire. I had $15 on that! I guess I should get another card.Comments

I’ve been very skeptical about screenshots and video demos of software ever since starting to work in it, but this blog about unfinished games often has scans of magazine pages with screenshots of software in them. Those trigger “oh wow they’re doing cool stuff” feelings that come from memories of being a credulous kid looking at paper computer magazines.Comments
So, if you’re targeting the over 40 crowd, embed your screenshots in fake paper magazine framing on your product-to-be web site. -
At the martial arts place, I was talking to the Muay Thai instructor, who had a lot to say about the local martial arts scene.Comments
He verified that the boxing instructor I had at Redline was homophobic. I remember him having an annoying tough guy attitude and throwing around slurs.
Also, Redline had a schism, and apparently the toxic side formed Citadel, who he says inflates fight records in order to get pro fights, then loses them. The non-toxic side reformed the Redline that relocated a block away.
I also heard about which gyms are roiding, and how Boston’s bias toward western boxing is holding it back. There is your martial arts scene report.
Every hobby that I observe in passing seems to be roiling in drama if you go far enough into it. -

The guy is going to try judo today. I tried to hype it up at breakfast. He was silent for a moment and gave me one of these looks: o_OComments
Then went on talking about the Leafling Challenges in Pikmin.
Well, nothing can compete with Pikmin, so maybe judo will at least be judged “OK”. -

I took a break from work to call FedEx to refuse shipment for a package, which is what Chewy told me to do. FedEx told me to just put a note on my door tomorrow, which seems inefficient, but OK.Comments

I started another blog to record how a certain part of my day goes. Maybe this will tell me how I got into a miserable situation, maybe not. But it is de-hazifying the situation. Hit me up if you want to see it.Comments

The guy beat Pikmin 4 today. Except Pikmin 4 is a modern game which has moved the ending to the 2/3rds of the way through, and the rest of the game is considered “additional”.Comments
I think I’m OK with that because it’s nice to have an early out if you need it. Though it is kind of anticlimactic that you can end the game by completing one of the easy night missions, if you happen to have left it undone at the point at which you rescue Olimar. -
