Piano benches are horrible for ergonomics. But if you give a kid an ergonomic office chair for piano, they can end up just swiveling the whole time.Comments

Normative Ethics:Comments
the guy’s reaction to this was “I’d use the saw to cut the tree instead.”
Suppose that George is trapped by the tree, as before, and that he will die unless we cut off his leg. But imagine now that George is unconscious and cannot be asked for his consent. Imagine, as well, that if we try to bring him to consciousness first, so as to obtain his consent, too much precious time will be lost, and it will be too late to save him. Can't we amputate his leg anyway since this is the only way to save George's life even though we're unable to get his permission first?
After this sidestep, though, he did find the various dilemmas in this book worth engaging with. Ethics: Also within children’s grasp! -
15-minute run, 13 pull-ups, back stuff. I did basically nothing yesterday except a few stretches and am having a good back day today. As usual, unsure if there’s a correlation.Comments

I just had to write a credit card charge dispute:Comments
I ordered a Tilting TV Wall Mount EGLT1. The order was acknowledged on Sept. 3. I did not receive it, so I emailed helpmehelpyou@echogear.com on Sept. 15 and Sept. 19. I received no reply.
I suspected there may be problems with a product that costs a third the price of its competitors. -
In the middle of this long Heavy Hole interview, Colin Marston says he does not like the SM-57 and prefers ribbon mics. His reasons:Comments
1. He works in pure digital recording.
2. Tape, which he used to work in, does its own dynamic compression.
3. Digital recordings of loud stuff from the SM-57 and similar often have to be compressed (differently for every recording, possibly) before being EQ'd.
That's sound. Still, I can't justify buying another mic, so I'll stick to the SM-57. -
Harper Lee seems like she was from another era, like Herman Melville. But she was alive through at least 2015, living a modern life.Comments
Ms. Lee had always lived simply, despite her fame and mounting wealth, and long shared a modest brick home in Monroeville with her older sister, Alice, who died in 2014. Ms. Lee could be seen around town in sweatpants looking for bargains at a Dollar General Store, washing her clothes at a local Laundromat, drinking coffee at a McDonald’s or eating at David’s Catfish House, where her usual iced tea and a small plate of catfish would cost about $6.
I read elsewhere that To Kill a Mockingbird brought in $3 million in revenues a year.
This bridge between “the classics” and Dollar General feels vaguely wormhole-like. -
I was just thinking about Westside Connection beefing with Cypress Hill. Westside was way more aggressive, but now no one remembers any Westside Connection songs.Comments
Now that I think about it, they sort of lost the beef while it was happening. Some Cypress Hill fan beat up Ice Cube at a stoplight, took his Westside Connection chain, and gave it to Cypress Hill. -
Great Stuff, the spray foam insulation, is an effective insulator. Its claim that you can sand it off, though, should be caveated. You can sand most of it off, but the bit closest to the surface is pretty hard to remove, leaving you with a dark yellow stain. The options you have are to either sand down the surface, along with the paint, if there is any, then paint it or to paint over it. So, if you’re sealing up a spot that’s easily visible, it’s probably better to use some kind of clear putty.Comments

The water main broke this morning, and it is now fixed! I have been avoiding liquids so that I wouldn’t have to pee. I also avoided scooping the litter because I wouldn’t be able to wash my hands. Now everything may flow again.Comments

You can name Harvard Medical School for a billion dollars.Comments
Around the same time, the Corporation decided on prices for the naming rights to HMS and many of the University’s other schools, according to the former Harvard official.
I thought they’d be all wink wink about this, but no. They’re like a domain registrar. -
On historically Black colleges and universities:Comments
I was taking an AP government class, junior year, I think. I don’t remember exactly what the assignment was, but for some reason, we were creating campaign collateral, and I created these Obama stickers. My dad's been involved in politics my entire life. I worked on campaigns, I’ve worked the conventions, and because of that I felt connected and excited about the project so, I created these stickers and part of the assignment was to pass them out. A classmate took what I created, ripped it up, shredded it in front of my face, and said, “You're only doing this because he's Black and you're Black, too.”
I went to a high school that had plenty of people like that. I hated those kids, but in retrospect, it makes me angrier to think about how irresponsible the adults running that place were.
What a contrast this is:I think one of the beauties of Spelman and HBCUs in general, is that you get to have more nuanced conversations around things like politics. We’re not talking about “is it because he's Black or not,” we're talking about what Obama’s actual policies are, and what stances he’s taking on issues. The Blackness isn't the first thing everybody sees, because it’s something we all have in common.
I’m not sure I’d want to go to a historically Asian university if they existed (though I guess that could be UC Berkeley), but the kind of freedom that author talks about would have been nice. In terms of freedom from racial discrimination, the college I went to was levels above high school for me, but still racist. The freedom from blatant racial slurs and violence was great, but you still got periodic reminders that you weren’t a member of the top-tier race.
Some faculty member posted to one of school newsgroups about how he was freaked out because he saw a large group of Asian people. I thought, whoa, the liberals at this school are going to be shocked that that guy said that in public. But no. The thread that followed flushed out that quite a few people thought that racism against Asians did not exist. One of my friends also told me this! (Though that guy was actually an out-of-the-closet racist, so I don’t know why I was disappointed. Kids are dumb.)
Anyway, everyone deserves a four-year break from that kind of thing, especially in their formative years.
