In the middle of this long Heavy Hole interview, Colin Marston says he does not like the SM-57 and prefers ribbon mics. His reasons:

1. He works in pure digital recording.
2. Tape, which he used to work in, does its own dynamic compression.
3. Digital recordings of loud stuff from the SM-57 and similar often have to be compressed (differently for every recording, possibly) before being EQ'd.

That's sound. Still, I can't justify buying another mic, so I'll stick to the SM-57.
