The guy ran the D&D Starter Set adventure for us today. He had a good time revealing areas and secret things.

The thing about 5E, though, is that it took 40 minutes to fight three zombies. Some of it is that a first-time nine-year-old DM was running it, but some of it was simply that everyone in 5E — both the PCs and monsters — have more hp. It does make players feel like they do more in battles, but inevitably, they also spend more time in battles.

Junior calisthenics (up to five fingertip push-ups now!), ab stuff, 12 pull-ups. Tried to run but had immediate piriformis or IT band (no idea which) pain. I’ve also had more incidents of WTF when getting up chairs in the past couple of days, so I guess I better watch it.

I fried an egg by basting the top of it with hot oil. It does indeed yield a very crispy egg! The yolk gets sort of boiled, though. I wonder if you’re supposed to avoid the yolk.

The guy just pointed out that basically all video games are skeuomorphic. I never thought about this. They could all be moving colored squares or cubes. All the details are there to speed understanding and acclimatization.

I called the music store and was put on hold, but not really. The clerk just put the receiver down, and I heard a customer tell him about how hard his marriage was.

When he got back on, he told me his price for a bridge is “I dunno whatever they sell it for online”. So, I guess I’ll just order it online.

I had not bothered to look up effective altruism, but just listened to a Philosophy Bites episode with William MacAskill, one of the founders. When asked why people have a problem with it, he just said something like I dunno maybe it makes them feel outdone.

Pretty disingenuous.

This bit from Wikipedia says a lot:
Sam Bankman-Fried, the eventual founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, had a seminal lunch with philosopher William MacAskill in 2012 while he was an undergraduate at MIT in which MacAskill encouraged him to go earn money and donate it, rather than volunteering his time for causes.
It is amazing that a philosopher could not figure out what could go wrong with that. Even if they hadn’t been outright fraudulent, what are the consequences for the *long term* of FTX promoting blockchain technology?

It doesn’t have to be blockchain to harm the long term, either. The advice “just go make money and donate some of it” can cause this kind of problem in other ways. What if he told a Google product manager, just have YouTube recommend whatever gets the clicks, then donate some of it.

There’s a very “carbon offsets” sort of nature to all of this.

And this doesn’t even get into all of their sexual harassment. Which, again, has long term consequences for the suffering of people in the future.

Amazing how they’ve stirred some poo into the simple idea of making things better for people in the far future.

The final problem was that solder had dropped down from the blue wire (the pickup) connection to the potentiometer and connected it all to the foil on the pickguard. Once I got rid of that, most of the noise was gone and pickup actually picked up the string vibrations.

I guess I have to back off on my “you can never have too much solder” idea.
