The other day, the guy was reading a book and said "Whoa!" and looked up from it.

I asked him what that was about. He said that two guys were in a duel, and one killed the other. Later, the other guy got killed in a battle. Then, in the afterlife place he went to, the guy he killed in a duel was there.

I need something to read something like that that works on adults.

I would like to have a different job, but the market is all AI trash right now, so I haven't been doing anything. But I feel I need to do something to at least take a step toward having a different job. So, I did the least effort thing, which was to log into LinkedIn.

It was a gross scroll as always, full of fake and/or deluded positive statements about companies and just non-stop obsequiousness. But instead of the usual "well, where can I get paid with less pain than I have now" thinking, my brain immediately jumped to "you need to get out of working entirely — work culture is fucked." Which, of course, is not an option. But I do wonder if this is kind of moment is what people who do heists go through.

I continue to get closer to making restaurant-equivalent American Chinese food at home! In the latest kung pao iteration, I actually bothered to dice small, which does make a difference in feel and sauce absorption.

We went for a night walk, and we saw the Big Dipper. It was indeed Big. Against a foreground of trees and apartments, it almost looked like some kind of colossal prank.

The ambient city glow is no joke, though. No sunlight or moonlight is providing the lighting in this photo.

I relistened to Sleep Funnels just now. Only the first track holds up. There is a good idea behind the title track, but it gets tiresome. I was really into the last track while I was making it because I was tired a lot back then (maybe because of the back problems) and was really interested in hearing really quiet noises while lying down. Now I don’t have the patience.

Well, what are you gonna do? Consult yourself a year in the future before you put something out? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I never know this until just now: the Selectors spec is right: there is no such thing as a "multiple selector". That's just a term made up by jQuery as if it were a selector itself, but it's not, it's just a notation used to separate multiple selectors. It's not a "selector" itself, let alone one called a "multiple selector", or a combinator despite what jQuery and MDN claim.

I've been using it like that for decades, and I guess my code just accidentally worked for other reasons!

I forced myself to learn a bit of cables.gl because I gotta learn a different way to make things once in a while. (Fifteen years ago, I was doing way too much learning new ways to make things.)

It's not bad, so far. Certainly, it's a way more approachable graph programming environment than Pure Data is. It runs in the browser or in an Electron wrapper, so there's no painful audio system config to do. It also seems to do much less because it's for making animated visuals, not for producing any kind of sound you can imagine. Which is nice if it happens to be doing what you want.

I would replace “Democrats” with the left. They’re very online and good at chastising and reassuring each other. Bad at actually winning and changing anything.
And this has always been the thing. In 2000, the electoral ring was thrown into a pile of pig shit and the Democrats and the Republicans were both invited to go rooting for it. The Democrats gingerly waded in and seemed to resent having to do so; the GOP, on the other hand, dove in with a snorkel. The whole thing was eventually decided in the Supreme Court, but the template was established: the Republicans would do what it takes to get what they want, and were perfectly happy to bash the Democrats in the teeth while they did it.
Scalzi thinks this has changed; it has was the candidate, but I’m not sure how they’re going to handle the attacks on the election system, like the AI-generated legal challenges and the Trump-packed Georgia board of electors.
