Just finished Table for One by Yun Ko-Eun. I think it could be called “casual magical realism.” Unreal things happen in the stories, but they’re usually not the driver. They’re stories with an interesting vibe. Sometimes I’d get to the end of one and not get what the “point” was but still enjoyed the ride.Comments

Just found out about this Noah Creshevsky guy via a Bandcamp Daily feature. He rules!Comments

Well, one of the consequences of me blowing up my computer for almost no reason is that my game didn't work, possibly initially because symlinks cloned from git don't really work, but after that because Godot, once it's convinced a class is duplicated across files, continues to believe that, even after you've fixed things on the filesystem.Comments
So, people end up doing things like this:I sometimes get the same parse error after renaming or moving script files. It feels like it doesn’t happen that often anymore in 4.2.2 but whenever it happens, I fix it like this:
That is nuts. My solution is to delete the .godot directory, then reload the project. Which is also something I resent doing, but is way less work than renaming every class twice.
Change class_name to some temporary class_name (“MyClass” → “MyClass1”)
Save the script
Change class_name back to the original name (“MyClass1” → “MyClass”)
Save the script
Restart Godot -
Heh, as I half-expected, I lost my user directory. It was mostly backed up in various ways, but this was still stupid.Comments

Well, I guess I was a bit cavalier about upgrading to a new major version of Ubuntu. It was seamless the last three times I did it, and I did this time just because why not.Comments
Well, this time I got stuck during the upgrade, so I rebooted and now it times out when mounting one of the partitions (even though I can see everything on it in recovery mode). Now instead of doing stuff I want to do, I'm waiting for an OS image to download so I can try to install it via USB. -
Upgrading my laptop to Ubuntu 24. Goodbye, possibly.Comments

For a while, I was using Apple Maps instead of Google Maps because Google Maps would just bump me into 3D mode all the time. I do not know who wants that shit.Comments
It seems to have calmed down on that front, and I guessed it knows more about traffic than Apple Maps, so I was using it for my horrible summer commute into Kendall Square. Today, it literally directed me on a loop near McGrath, maybe because connectivity dropped and it was behind on where I was.
Anyway, it's a wash, and every drop-off ends up totaling around 100 minutes. I finally figured out that the Cambridge Main Library is a place I can work from on non-meeting days that is tolerable and doesn't require me to move my car to another parking zone every two hours, so I can just drop off, drive to Harvard Square, work, pick up at Kendall, then drive home, thereby cutting the driving in half.
However, this is the last week of this camp, tomorrow is my only non-meeting day left, and I have to take the car in to get the serpentine belt tightened so that the alternator can charge the battery and all the electrical stuff will work at normal capacity, etc.
So, I guess I can tuck this strategy away for next year. Though next year, maybe the red line won't be shut down for July, and we can just drive to Alewife, then take the train in. Or, who knows. Maybe math camps will be banned by presidential decree for being somehow pro-trans. - Comments

Kind of a bummer: The guy’s friend’s mom said that they’re going to school in Wales for a month as a trial. I don’t her well enough to say this, but I was thinking, you’re escaping, aren’t you? Goddamnit and also very good for you your family.Comments

Once again, I feel bad that I didn't leave the country. I should probably just create a daily recurring event in my calendar for this.Comments

Katt's back, so she took the Smidgeo bullet and woke up and fed the cats, and once again, I got up like 20 minutes before I had to drive the guy to camp. I'm meeting a friend in that area today, so I'm working from the library instead of driving back home.Comments
As expected, I forgot some things: Headphones and trail mix. Surprisingly, things haven't been too bad without the headphones. At the East Cambridge libraries, there's always some butt talking on his cellphone. At the main library, everyone is being decent.
I'm actually OK without the trail mix, too. I ate a single boiled egg before leaving, and I'm still not hungry, 2.5 hours later. Egg power! -
Driving on Storrow Drive at night with windows down and an organ concerto on is surprisingly good times. Also, I realized today that I'm almost never out at night. Things looked weird and dark!Comments

Junior calisthenics, worked on the guy’s seoinage, eleven pull-ups. I hope that as we get deeper into election season, I’ll be in the condition to do longer and longer workouts.Comments

Over in nine-year-old problems, the guy accidentally sold a rare shield (“you can’t just buy it at a store”) that he had upgraded to +7 as well as a sword that was level 3 or something in Shiren.Comments
