I just went outside. It is a dream if you want steam.Comments

Weirdly visually-high-res dreams last night:Comments
1) I was on a rooftop, and I saw one of those 100-ft. tall gas station signs flying around. It landed near the building I was on, took off again, then hit the lip of the roof of the building, dropped back down, then took off again.
Ultimately, it landed on the rooftop I was on. Several guys came out, and they said this was a prototype for video game they were working on that was peripheral-oriented, like Guitar Hero
I asked something about whether it could be controlled a different way, and one of them proudly replied that it could only be controller via joystick. Some podcasters were also there (dream insertion without explanation), and they nodded sagely as the game dev said you could spend $5 each on researching two control schemes or you could spend $10 to research one really good control scheme.
2) There was a bunch of 16-bit smoke clouds exploding out of the doors of a building. Everything else was analogue real-world resolution. The animation rate on the smoke was so slow that it looked stop-motion.
I tried to get a video but accidentally tapped the area on the phone that switches the camera to photo. By the time I fixed it, the smoke was gone.
The doors opened, and graduating students wearing the graduation suits came out. It looked like a church inside.
Then, I got an email from my friend that announced he decided to send his kid to a private high school.
A cat jumped on me, and I woke up. -
Canadian CarpentryComments
Designed for carpentry apprenticeship programs and based on the National Building Code of Canada (NBC), this beautifully crafted and comprehensive text features Canadian construction techniques, Canadian terms and definitions, Canadian maps and tables, dual dimensioning (metric/Imperial), Canadian spelling, links to online learner resources, and references to the NBC and to Canadian standards throughout.
I am intrigued by the Canadian construction techniques. The Canadian mystique! -

Epilogue: This afternoon, shopping cart guy (red-haired bearded guy in a Harvard shirt) asked me for money in Davis Square.Comments

My former colleague Jason's band, Lame Drivers, released a really polished album. It's sort of like punk but not angry? "Indie rock but not twee?" The playing is tight, and you can easily hear every instrument. Anyway, I think a lot of people like this kind of sound even though I'm not familiar enough with its genre to describe it, so you should check it out!Comments

I looked at Blades in the Dark, which was heralded as the future of RPGs a few years ago and still gets a lot of respect.Comments
I don't really get it. I guess it is nice that they've made the uptime/downtime parts of adventures more formal and the dice pool thing is cool. But it doesn't seem all that revolutionary. Maybe I'd have to see it played. -
It's obvious in retrospect, but this Science Quickly episode pointed out that there's no time zones in Antarctica. I mean, they could have them, but there would be a new one every few miles.Comments

Outside of a Star Market, I saw an employee in a physical struggle with a guy with a small personal shopping cart. The employee thought he stole stuff; I have no idea if he did.Comments
I stopped partly because the truck in front of my stopped to see what was going to happen and partly so I could call 911 or yell or something if someone was going to get seriously hurt. It fortunately never escalated beyond them trying wrest groceries from each other.
It ended with the shopping cart guy walking away. The employee threw a bag of chips at him. Shopping cart guy turned to me and said, “See that?”
The employee replied, “See what, fucking stealer? Criminal motherfucker!” -

Roughly 8 in 10 registered voters who watched the debate (81%) say it had no effect on their choice for president, according to a CNN poll of debate watchers conducted by SSRS. Roughly equal shares of Joe Biden and Donald Trump supporters said the debate had changed their mind.
So, it was a wash. Other polls may differ, but I don’t think any debate has mattered in the last 20 years at least. They’re from a time in which people got less information, so people were genuinely undecided and got new information out of debates. Now they’re held because people will watch them.
This isn’t to say things are looking good for democracy, but the debate is not likely to have moved anything. -
Heh, someone at work is adding a new JS framework to something to do something that is likely quite doable without it. Again.Comments
But what can I really do? I gently suggested that it might not be necessary, and that's pretty much all I can do. It's not in a product I work on directly (although in the future, I could end up on it), and adding frameworks to solve every problem is so firmly normalized now, that you kind of sound like some know-it-all if you suggest that you can do things without them.
This comes right on the heels of a post yesterday on a message board talking about replacing an "outdated" VB6 app that walked users through some options, then generated a text file. The non-cranky sounding consensus leaned toward Electron, which is basically shipping an entire browser to generate a text file in a "nice" way.
To put things in perspective, though, "slap something someone else wrote on it; it's more standard" syndrome is not even in the top three worst things about working in software now. That kind of wastefulness is dwarfed by applying LLMs to anything and everything as well as companies just being blatantly shitty house flipping operations completely divorced from making things that help more than harm. -
Amherst also has school budget problems. Though according to that guy, it’s that they’re too well-funded and have a problem backing away from that even though their enrollment is decreasing.Comments
In conclusion, many school districts have problems, I guess. -
You can also become friends with individual monsters in Shiren by declaring your love for them. If they don’t return it, though, you are emotionally wounded. You actually lose hp.Comments
-
Apparently, you can buy licenses to be friends with entire classes of monsters in Shiren. So, a scorpion license makes you friends with every scorpion.Comments
I imagine rich people really like this idea. Also, I guess the Freemasons actually do work like this! I’d play a Freemason roguelike. -
Yesterday, the guy told me a bunch of stuff about secret gitan rooms in Shiren.Comments
He also asked me if the current month was May. -
Junior calisthenics, ten pull-ups. Trapezius felt totes normal!Comments
I've been doing basically only junior calisthenics for the past couple of weeks. I think they're actually the most valuable workout at my age, way more important than running or pull-ups, even though it doesn't feel like much is happening during them. They literally exercise all of the parts so that none of them get "surprised" when used during other times.
Someday I may get back into ability-expansion exercises, but I think the junior calisthenics are going to continue until death, regardless. -
The compost has a bunch of garlic in it, and it smells great!Comments
This seems to happen to me more often than it does to others. -
Via Christa, I found out Fastmail fired as many union workers as they could. Here is my letter (based on Christa’s) to support@fastmail.com, which you can also email if you’re a customer.Comments
Hello,
I have been a Fastmail customer for six years. By and large, I’ve liked it and felt like I’m making an ethical choice.
However, after hearing that Fastmail laid off 60% of their employees’ union’s bargaining unit, including the bargaining committee, I no longer think this is true. While you don’t mine my email so you can target me in all sorts of other contexts like Google does, things like this make me think that you don’t fully understand why people choose your service.
Please reinstate the workers and to bargain with the union in good faith for a fair contract so I don’t have to migrate to Proton Mail. -
The guy is trying out cello this year. I had trouble explaining how to even hold it. You just, like, do it, man.Comments

There’s a kind of pro-military clothing that’s surprisingly subtle. It’s patriotic and has slogans about the constitution or warriors, but the graphic design is under control, and it’s not overrun with camo. They’re very different from the pro-Trump hats and bumper stickers, even though I’m sure many of these guys are pro-Trump. I’m mildly surprised this genre of clothing exists.Comments
