Another thing learned about our house: We don’t have strapping between the joists in a lot of rooms.Comments

A Tale of Repair, reprinted from a Slack:Comments
I asked electricians to replace a wall-through kitchen fan that didn't work.
Old one turned out to not be installed to code. There's no non-ridiculous way to install the new one (which includes a box for the wiring and makes it need wall space).
Also found out the people that installed the old one cut a load-bearing beam, but sort of shunted around it.
1:44
Anyway, we said, OK forget it. Don't put in the new one. But the old one can't be put back in either.
So
But they did put a board and drywall over it, and we have better insulation than when we had broken fan in that wall.
So, now I gotta find Some Guy to repair the exterior in a more permanent way.
It helps that I kinda expected something like this.
Anyway, never own a home that's not perfect. Just have you family sleep in a garbage can or something! -
Well, that sucks. They can’t install the new fan while staying up to code because the old fan was installed hack-style in the first place. They also can’t put the old fan back in because its housing broke while they were removing it.Comments
So, now there’s a hole to the outside in the kitchen, which they’re going to cover with wood and drywall, but we’ll have to fix it for real later. -
I briefly thought about installing a wall vent myself. I just saw that the electricians had moved the stove and found that the wiring going to the old fan has no power. That already makes it worth paying someone else.Comments

There's a guy on a meeting I'm in that sounds just like Dr. Nick. It's a good thing I'm camera off in that meeting because it gets me every time he says "Hey, everybody!"Comments

An underground website called OnlyFake is claiming to use “neural networks” to generate realistic looking photos of fake IDs for just $15, radically disrupting the marketplace for fake identities and cybersecurity more generally.Comments
In our own tests, OnlyFake created a highly convincing California driver's license, complete with whatever arbitrary name, biographical information, address, expiration date, and signature we wanted. The photo even gives the appearance that the ID card is laying on a fluffy carpet, as if someone has placed it on the floor and snapped a picture, which many sites require for verification purposes. 404 Media then used another fake ID generated by this site to successfully step through the identity verification process on OKX. OKX is a cryptocurrency exchange that has recently appeared in multiple court records because of its use by criminals.
Yes, but do you really need a neural network to create a fake ID? OnlyFake makes you upload your own photo. There's practically nothing to generate at that point. From there, I imagine it's just an image compositing program, like a fancy version of Link Finds. While OnlyFake says it uses “neural networks” to create its fake IDs, 404 Media has not seen evidence that the service uses generative AI tools. “I don’t know exactly what is going on here but I suspect that they are using some tech to insert/replace the image into a template of a license/id,” Hany Farid, a professor at UC Berkeley and one of the world’s leading experts on digitally manipulated images, told 404 Media in an email. “If they were using genAI to create whole cloth the entire ID, they would have trouble dealing with inconsistencies in the background.”
Yeah. I mean, I'm sure there's a lot of work they had to do to get the details right, but I think this grift is a better fit for normal programming than for ML. But AI sells, whether the audience is VCs and/or criminals. -

I updated static-web-archive and get-htm-l-fragment to support multiple media file per post, a really basic feature I didn't think I needed for about six years.Comments
While I was doing it, I thought, "Why didn't I just make it support multiple files in the first place? It's not that hard." While updating the client that actually takes http requests and sends them to static-web-archive, I realized it was likely because of the limitations of FormData. FormData isn't nested. If you want to send nested data like an array of objects, you have to convert it into a string, then convert it back. If you try to do that with binary data, you blow up the size 133% by converting it to base64.
So, I settled for this terrible thing where the server app looks for `buffer0`, `buffer1`, etc. from the form, then packs them into an array before sending them to static-web-archive. -

I did a bunch of editing in Vimeo only to find that videos you edit in video cannot be shown to anyone unless you pay to upgrade. Needless to say, this is a bad experience, and makes me want to just post videos in Digital Ocean or S3.Comments
