We finished season 1 of Physical: 100 a couple of weeks ago. As many reservations I have about the show's obsession in physical appearance, I do think a lot of the games are really well-designed. (Minor spoilers ahead.)Comments
At one point, they have to move a two-ton ship up a ramp. Later on, they have to flip a bunch of tiles over, but doing that for five minutes turns out the be shockingly tiring. And it turns out seeing for how long someone can lift up a 220-lb. rock is surprisingly compelling. -
I was making fries, but without the Thermapen because it's out of batteries, and the oil (predictably) got way hotter than I thought it was. The fries were also less dried than I though they were, so when I dropped them in, a bunch of water evaporated at the same time some burning happened, and a huge smoke cloud materialized.Comments
Despite cooking for two decades now, I seem to end up in the porkchop sandwiches situation every other week or so. -

How patient-led research could speed up medical innovationComments
Because of the lack of research into long covid, a group of patients started “doing their own research”, except in a structured and scientific way. It actually helped bootstrap professional scientists with this kind of research. -

I've been mentally substituting "the singularity" for "the eclipse". It does make things more exciting.Comments
"Have a good trip to your singularity viewing location!" "All the Airbnbs are booked up because of the singularity." "I didn't plan for the singularity in time." -
There’s a conference of suited people in the area I usually camp out in during math circle. The good news is that I got some free coffee. The bad news is that it’s worse than the coffee I made at home.Comments

Happy 13.0.11.8.3! That’s what today is in the Mayan almost-base-20 long count calendar.Comments
Also, it appears the Mayans didn’t have anything to say in particular about the upcoming solar eclipse. The current creation started 12 Gregorian years ago and should go on for quite a while since the previous one lasted over 5,000 solar years. -

Florida has seen a population boom in recent years, but many longtime residents and recent transplants say rising costs and divisive politics have them fleeing the Sunshine State.Comments
Florida has had a population boom over the past several years, with more than 700,000 people moving there in 2022, and it was the second-fastest-growing state as of July 2023, according to Census Bureau data.
There’s a lot in that article about frequent political clashes. I have no idea if that’s really a widespread occurrence in Florida. But the part about home insurance costs both surprised me and seemed inevitable once I heard about it.
…
But while hundreds of thousands of new residents have flocked to the state on the promise of beautiful weather, no income tax and lower costs, nearly 500,000 left in 2022, according to the most recent census data. Contributing to their move was a perfect storm of soaring insurance costs, a hostile political environment, worsening traffic and extreme weather, according to interviews with more than a dozen recent transplants and longtime residents who left the state in the past two years.Homeowners insurance rates in Florida rose 42% last year to an average of $6,000 annually, driven by hurricanes and climate change, and car insurance in Florida is more than 50% higher than the national average, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
But the car insurance rates, despite what I’ve seen of unpredictable Florida driving, do seems really high. -

I’m trying to imagine how this happened. You go the bathroom, wash your hands, then…start cleaning your gun? Practice cool gun moves in the mirrors? -
