Here is some classic shit:Comments
- I designed a new version of service to handle a specific client.
- A manager liked how it was more consistent than the old version.
- He decided to replace the old one with this one.
- I said it doesn’t have all of the features of the old one, nor is it as fast in some cases, even if it is more consistent. I made a bunch of benchmarks showing this.
- Manager said consistency is more important; replace it.
- Manager goes on vacation.
- Turns out there are people maintaining products using this service that don’t agree. They complain.
- I have directions to wrap it up and move on to other work.
I think this is one of the most classic situations in software work. Classic as heck! -

I get this in the Node 20 debugger now:Comments
(To exit, press Ctrl+C again or Ctrl+D or type .exit)
debug> restart
< Debugger ending on ws://127.0.0.1:9229/d13150be-54f5-4aaa-8686-62d8727ddd61
< For help, see: https://nodejs.org/en/docs/inspector
<
debug> Uncaught:
Error [ERR_DEBUGGER_STARTUP_ERROR]: Timeout (3000) waiting for 127.0.0.1:9229 to be free
at portIsFree (node:internal/debugger/inspect:65:13)
at async runScript (node:internal/debugger/inspect:85:3) {
code: 'ERR_DEBUGGER_STARTUP_ERROR'
}
So, I'm trying to restart the debugger, but it isn't releasing the port before it restarts, so it can't restart. Ctrl+C and running it again doesn't dodge the problem, either.
I don't know what's going on, but this didn't used to happen in Node 14. I bet they thought this was no big deal, but the debugger is one of the most valuable things that Node has. This makes it so that you can only debug once without hassle, and just console.log maybe less trouble than doing this then finding the PID on every run. - Comments

We’re trying a Nissan Leaf this week. I think Consumer Reports is way pickier than me about drive feel. It felt very smooth to me. It is just slightly higher and more minivan-like than I’d like, but I can live with that.Comments

I gave the guys an out from the game show in hell I was running in D&D. They all took it right away!Comments
So, I guess I didn’t really balance the risk and reward very well, which is not surprising since I didn’t really have any pondering time when putting together this adventure.
It was modeled after Physical: 100 (and De Mol a bit with unknown roles), but I forgot when choosing the model that a lot is lost when the players aren’t really competing with each other like they are in those shows. Also, prize money means way less to high-level D&D characters than they do real people.
Well, another game, another lesson! The next adventure is way more traditional. -

Horripilating PresenceComments
by Void WitchCreating our debut album as a bunch of middle aged dads is an exercise in absurdity. Chained by responsibility, the mechanical habits of life, a lack of time and energy at the end of every long day, we pushed to write and record these songs over the course of a few years. This album exists because we needed it to exist, because our world-worn sanity needed a brief escape. We hope you enjoy this labor of absurdity.
Those are some good riffs, dads! -

The reason I was trying to call Gerald was that he was renting a condo I had in Evanston back then and hadn't paid his rent in a while. It turned out he had been in a car accident, then died from covid in the convalescent center. -

The main impact of this massive data loss, that happened around mid-July, is that there are now dead links to old profiles and various old pages all across the internet, plus the additional impact of lost data that is not being recovered. It’s a real blow to the broader preservation effort to know that the one place where data is supposed to be safe forever has had a massive data loss and the organisation responsible are not taking proactive steps to address the issue fully.

Basic thing I didn’t know: You can use a regular 120 V outlet to charge an electric car. It’s really neat that it’s so accessible. Of course, it’s slower than a 240 V charge, but 12 hours gets you 48 miles of charge, and upgrading your electrical service can cost over $4,000.Comments
