I follow the algebra in the midpoint circle algorithm article, but at the end, I'm still somehow skeptical? Even after implementing it and seeing how it works!

Squaring the previous x value then subtracting twice the current y value and also 1 and taking the square root of all of that gets you the next x value in the circle? Symbolic manipulation magic!

I suppose you can think of it as the square of x dropping by double y every time you go up a y (in the first quadrant). That's a bit easier to swallow.

Anyway, I'm a math caveman now.

One Serrano pepper has very little effect on a pound of beans. Also, an hour of cooking is not enough to soften then beans. I personally like the hard beans because I like the chili to be on the beans side of the beans-sauce continuum, but no one else did. I’ll start earlier next time!

Even if you zoom out, you can't pick Sunday dates in this date picker. Some really basic work needed to be done on this `jb-date-picker` Angular component at jetBlue. The level of professionalism — specifically among managers who are the ones who set incentives to rush development and wave these things through — is ridiculously low for companies expecting people to jump through their hoops to give them hundreds of dollars at a time.

I've been wary of lifestyle inflation for a while, so that's why I avoid developing a taste for fancy coffee, and I will never try the $35 pick.

Taste inflation, which is a cause of lifestyle inflation, has got me, though. We just picked up the next two Percy Jackson books and a Smartest in the Universe book. That's about a week and a half of reading that is about as satisfying to him as someone watching The Wire for the first time. There is basically always a really engrossing book for him around the corner.

I think I've finished about a quarter of the fiction books I've checked out. I think the last one was You Dreamed of Empires. It was good, but I wasn't like oh man I gotta spend all my spare time on this.

I have no real conclusion about this. I wouldn't want to be one of the millions of adults that's into the Marvel movies, but at the same time, I do want to feel like there's a pool of engrossing entertainment available to me that continually refreshes.

Apparently, cars can now weigh the person in the passenger seat, and turn off the air bag if they're likely to be a child. (Airbags are bad for kids.)

That's neat, but that's another thing that could fail. I'd rather have a switch.

Why Massachusetts schools are having an 'extremely difficult' financial year
The city [Braintree] has struggled to raise enough tax revenue to cover yearly school cost increases. The district's operating costs typically go up by 4% to 5% each year, according to Joyce, but state law prescribes a 2.5% limit to how much a city can increase its tax levy.
This law affects basically every city. It is stupid, written as if its sponsors had not heard of inflation. It is extra stupid, considering America’s extremely stupid practice of tying school funding to property taxes.

Somerville teens are going feral.
During a firecracker incident, one librarian remembered assuring patrons the sounds they were hearing from inside the library weren’t gunshots. “When your building is full of flammable paper objects, it can definitely stress you out. You’re like ’Oh, are we going to have a fire happen? What do we do?’”

The librarians detailed a year of increasing fights inside and outside the building involving an estimated 30 to 50 teens shouting, kicking and shoving, with some incidents forcing librarians to intervene physically. “It’s scary to be in that situation, and it’s scary for our patrons to think that might affect coming into this building and using it,” one said. Patrons trying to use the library have encountered rock throwing and people being hit with sticks. Patrons have complained that they have been hassled while trying to pass, and smoke has been blown in their faces.
Wow, shit is escalating there.
