Also, I gotta start lotioning my feet or something. I scraped my ankle and bled all over the mat. On one hand, it couldn’t be helped. On the other, no one should have to deal with someone else’s blood!Comments

I feel like I was in worse shape than the last two times for judo tonight? I was tired after breakfalls. It was less intense that the previous classes, even.Comments
I actually only did one round of randori at the end. I was dying. I really sucked, but I feel good for having tried some things. It's sort of good to be bad at things, I think?
And there's just no way to get in good condition for this class other than to just keep going. There is no way I can motivate myself to work this hard without partners/opponents.
Also, I should probably come with an agenda. The senseis are really loose and just ask you what you want to work on. I asked about ouchi gari, which was good to work on. Then, no one said anything the next time the asked, so I brought up bridges, which I needed, but then again no one spoke up, so I just said turnovers.
They ended up going through a few super technical and involved turnovers. They were cool, but for the life of me, I can't remember how they go. I should have said "simple turnovers". -
Bonus Cat is sneezing. I never understood how indoor cats get colds. Am I somehow bringing cat viruses home from the outside world?Comments

I'm trying to be frugal and stick to 62°F in the basement. It might be a little too cold? It does make tea really good, though.Comments

I finally bothered to stop and purge the mysql instance on my VPS, which was consistently using the most memory. It wasn't crushing the server or anything, but it was annoying always see at the top of `top` even though I have no MySQL apps there anymore. Matomo was the last thing that used it, and I dropped that months ago.Comments

I could not help but post this long comment about this post praising Bluesky:Comments
Certainly, everyone should get off Twitter.
It should be noted, however, Twitter was a largely unregulated space before Musk which allowed Nazis to find each other and for Trump to and spread information incite hatred.
Despite him breaking Twitter’s TOS several times, he was never removed. Twitter was a big part of Trump’s rise (along with lazy journalists who couldn’t stop feeding him attention). Jack Dorsey both presided over the early 2010’s good times at Twitter and also made the ultimate call to keep racists and other kinds of bigots on, citing his version of free speech, which was much like Musk’s.
He is motivated by power and perceived shareholder value. Once he has fattened up Bluesky with users’ free effort and goodwill, he’s very likely to turn the crank on it to cash in at the cost of a nice conversion space and/or the health of a democracy.

I Destroyed a Car to Explore Some Music MythsComments
Last time I took my car to the mechanic, he said he wasn't going to fix it for me anymore. It was all rusted underneath, and he told me I shouldn't put another dollar into it. So I knew what I needed to do. I needed to string it up across the windshield and play some music on it. People say that a car shouldn’t be able to sound like a guitar. It's not ash, alder or mahogany. But I did that.
Jim Lill is doing the Lord’s work with regard to completely unfounded beliefs about guitar equipment that drive a million-dollar industry. -
I don't want to bum anyone out, but actual Nazi Stephen Miller is back in the White House. I like to keep in mind that other liberal democracies aren't paradises, but Canada and New Zealand don't have that going on.Comments

In just one year, New Zealand has taken such a radical turn that it has become politically unrecognizable.Between 2017 and 2023, from coming to power at just 37 years old until her surprising resignation, Jacinda Ardern had transformed the country into a social democratic mecca and a beacon of progressivism around the world, which her successor, the conservative Christopher Luxon, has needed only a year to dismantle.
Maaaan. Well, they still have proportional representation and really low campaign spending limits there, which should really slow down the most extreme changes.
Twelve months into the current right-wing coalition, New Zealand is politically unrecognisable, having swung back and forth at lightning speed, driven in large part by the same trends that have brought Trump back and European neo-fascism to the fore. The agenda that sets the pace is not environmentalism, equality and improved labour rights, but anti-immigration and anti- woke , law and order, culture war, tribalism and identity politics. Fantasy and symbolism instead of pragmatism and compromise. Less state. Much less.
…
The parties that make up the right-wing New Zealand coalition are closely linked to the cabal of conservative think tanks called the Atlas Network, which has its networks stretched from Argentina to Australia and which includes the Heritage Foundation of Washington, the inspiration behind Donald Trump's Project 2025. -

A lot of the kids from the dojo the two Maga dads were from lost, but they seemed like nice kids that tried hard. I hope they end up OK.Comments
Looks like the town they're from went 46.7% Trump, 51.9% Harris, so it's not the total Magaland I guessed it was. -
It was a good tournament, but larger tournaments are very long. The guy lost his first match, but then won his next two on the ground. In one of them, he actually turned over an opponent lying flat, which I've never seen him do successfully even in practice.Comments
One of his opponents had some self-confidence issues in class, but he was really good today. Hooray for judo! And human development!
The guy could stand to have some big throws so he doesn't have to work as hard to win, but he is working on that. In the meantime, getting opponents to the ground messily, then locking it up there is fine. -
A couple of shitty Trump dads from the cape showed up at the tournament. Ignore ignore ignoreComments

For a while, Liberace adopted the stage name Walter Busterkeys.[12]Comments
Up until now, all I knew about Liberace was that he was a gay classical pianist that older people liked to make fun of for his sexuality and flamboyant dress. It turns out he did have a classical background, but he played a sort of technical comedic pop classical. Also, he never came out and sued publications for saying he was gay. -
Even when implementing an old and established algorithm, I'm afraid of `while` statements and always feel like putting in a `if (tries > maxTries) { throw new Error('Exceeded maxTries.') }`. But indeed in this case, the while will always resolve as long as the tree is valid.Comments

That man, an Albanian quisling, as teacher Nora called him, was responsible for the transfer of sovereignty to Italy after the flight of King Zog. Zog's rule, and all that followed from it, marked the end of Albanian aspirations to become a truly free society.
