Heh, it just occurred to me that the "vote no" signs are what got me to donate to the Vote yes on prop. 6, 7, and 8 campaign. The number of vote no signs I've seen worry me. If the vote yes campaign actually put those up, that's a genius move.Comments

On the off-chance that you live in Medford, Vote yes on prop. 6, 7, and 8 and donate to the campaign if you can. They are about raising the property tax more than 2.5% (inflation is 3.2%). Prop. 6 is funding the fire dept. HQ, which honestly I don't know much about, but 7 is about maintaining the school budget at current levels, and 8 is about vocational and arts funding.Comments
We may actually have to move if this proposition is defeated because I can't imagine things not going downhill if schools have even less funding than they do. -

20-minute run with the guy, two 20-second slow roll-ups.Comments
-
The tournament went pretty well. The guy went the distance in both of his official matches, then he did an exhibition. I don’t feel bad for the kids who lose, but I do feel bad for the kids who get thrown on their backs in the first five seconds.Comments
He got to try his stuff! It sometimes worked. He lost his first match to a very aggressive Korean girl who pinned him for ten seconds (a half point). That went unanswered.
He won his other match by throwing really early with kouchi gari (it was smooth!), then fighting off pins for what felt like forever. It must have been exhausting. At one point, they were standing back up, and he did throw with osotogari, but his opponent landed sitting.
Overall, he’s great at finding opportunities for throws, but he’s not finishing them strongly, which gives opponents a chance to land how they’d prefer to land. He’s also hesitant on the ground and always ends up defending.
Anyway, good job everybody! - Comments

They should seriously play white noise at local restaurant-promoting festivals. I'd be into that, assuming I wanted to go to the festival in the first place.Comments

I think I'd rather have ska playing at me than this midtempo "classic rock" bullshit.Comments

Some ‘70s and ‘80 covers band that also sometimes plays “the blues” has been playing at the Taste of Whatever for hours. They’re turned up loud. (I walked up to them to verify that it wasn’t our house acoustics that made it so I could hear vocals from inside.)Comments
I think there was some Tom Petty? Tears for Fears, Steve Miller, and some other former radio dominators.
As a kid, I’d usually describe this kind of music as “weak” and leave it at that. But what I wasn’t getting at was that it was not tough. Listening to the bass and vocals of this stuff makes me realize that this kind of “Taste of Your Town/Area” music is shot through with sentimentality. That’s what gives it its grossness. I’m not really a fan of hyperpop, but it doesn’t have that glaze of glurge, so I’d much rather hear that blasting into my house.
The only good thing this band did is playing the song that It Was a Good Day sampled. Most of the song is boring, but you could sometimes imagine Ice Cube rapping over it. -
I feel the guy is in good shape for the tournament. I don't know if he'll get any wins because that depends largely on who shows up, but he can consistently do seven or so consecutive meaningful attacks. The chances of putting someone in an awkward position while reacting to that are decent. I think he's over waiting for the perfect opening?Comments
At the least, I think he'll feel good about having done something, which is way better than those times where you freeze up and get thrown without attempting anything. -

I was excited to find Pipedreams, thinking I had access to thousands of hours of pipe organ music. However, they don't have a podcast feed, and episode playback doesn't seem to work that well from their web site.Comments
I considered listening to the show live, but it appears that I would have to have an actual radio and be up at 5 AM on Sunday. -
Did the back workout. Also tried making the up part of a pull-up take ten seconds as well as the down part. I did two reps.Comments

Today’s episode of The Daily was about what was going on in the Ohio town where Trump’s “Haitians eating dogs” conspiracy theory came from. It’s really sad. There’s an influx of Haitian immigrants there, doing work at new factories and basically creating growth there.Comments
And of course, resentment from the existing White population. This happens every time. It’s why Vincent Chin was killed in the ‘80s in Michigan. Now I think about it, I’ve also seen it happen among white collar workers. I knew a dude who said that the Chinese were dirty literally because they worked harder than him in his white collar industry. He actually said their hard working was what made them dirty.
In this Ohio town, there was a car accident in which a Haitian driver, who was not under the influence, plowed into a school bus, killing a child.
That’s horrific, but instead of being about an individual’s criminal negligence, the White people in the town used it to get explicit about immigrants in general. Nationally, it took off among Republicans.
The family of the kid who was killed, on top of dealing with an unimaginable horror, had to deal with their kid’s death being a Trump weapon. The father spoke out against it and asked people to not be racist.
I’m afraid for him. The Sandy Hook parents were viciously harassed for years. The right has no mercy at all for people who have just lost a child. -
