It was a good tournament, but larger tournaments are very long. The guy lost his first match, but then won his next two on the ground. In one of them, he actually turned over an opponent lying flat, which I've never seen him do successfully even in practice.
One of his opponents had some self-confidence issues in class, but he was really good today. Hooray for judo! And human development!
The guy could stand to have some big throws so he doesn't have to work as hard to win, but he is working on that. In the meantime, getting opponents to the ground messily, then locking it up there is fine.
