I got the car stuck in the snow on the street near the library while trying to park. It's very densely packed, so traction is especially low. But I was able to do my usual "moving forward then moving backward repeatedly" escape. After I got out, I noticed another guy with a full-sized van was stuck.
The driver had just moved here last week. He had Missouri plates. I remember minor disasters like this happening to me on my first week in Massachusetts, too.
He was trying to dig out behind his wheels with some wooden shims, which were not very effective, but they were was the best he had.
I suggested backing up because that direction was downhill. He realized there was more space behind him than he thought, so he tried it and moved a few inches but got stuck on the snow mound behind one of his front wheels again. I tried pushing, but not much progress was made.
So, I suggested the tried and true repeated back-and-forth rolling tactic. I left to go inside the library and told him he could get me if he needed an extra pair of hands. I'd only walked about fifty feet when he drove out of the rut and down the street.
So, take hard, icy snow seriously, is the lesson, I guess!
