Breakthroughs in synthetic biology could create mirror versions of natural molecules, with devastating consequences for life on EarthComments
The ability to evade immune responses could allow bacteria to cause lethal infections as they multiply unchecked. Unlike viruses, bacteria don’t need to interact with specific molecules to infect an organism, and mirror bacteria could infect a broad range of hosts, including humans, other animals, and plants. And a lack of predators could enable mirror bacteria to spread widely through ecosystems.
Maybe this guy was quoted selectively in an unfair way, but if not, wow:
Many of the authors initially thought mirror bacteria would not survive outside of a lab, given the lack of mirror nutrients, Glass says, but the report concludes that there are enough nutrients that would nourish mirror bacteria to sustain them.He is unconvinced that raising an alarm so far in advance of any threat, or even the existence of technology that could be used to directly create it, is appropriate. “This is like banning the transistor because you're worried about cybercrime 30 years down the road,” Ellington says. He is also concerned governments and regulators may not respond as the authors expect, potentially stifling beneficial research. “I’m not particularly worried about a mostly unknown threat 30 years from now versus the good that can be done now,” he says.
That’s the definition of shortsightedness! -

I called the medical provider that the guy is with about whether they'd take this insurance we're considering signing up for. At first, they were like no way. Then, after explaining further, they said yes, as long as we do not get a managed care plan.Comments
So, now I don't even trust that second answer. Why doesn't anyone know anything? -

Eventually, the system forwarded me to OptumRX, even though my question wasn't about prescriptions.
At OptumRX, they explained that they only deal with prescriptions and forwarded me back to the insurance company. -

I don’t do any exclaiming during judo, but I like martial arts exclamations. I like to say “Ossssss!” when I get up from a chair or finish a meal.Comments

I was trying to remember what Dr. Seuss had the line "Up is bup" in it. Upon searching, the closest thing is Hop on Pop, which has Pup is up/Up pup."Comments
"Up is bup!" was something the guy said while riffing on Hop on Pop when he was three. -
UnitedHealth Is Strategically Limiting Access to Critical Treatment for Kids With AutismComments
The insurer that has been paying for her son’s therapy, UnitedHealthcare, has begun — to the befuddlement of his clinical team — denying him the hours they say he requires to maintain his progress. Inside the insurance conglomerate, the nation’s largest and most profitable, the slashing of care to children like Benji does have a reason, though it has little to do with their needs. It is part of a secret internal cost-cutting campaign that targets a growing financial burden for the company: the treatment of thousands of children with autism across the country.
ProPublica has obtained what is effectively the company’s strategic playbook, developed by Optum, the division that manages mental health benefits for United. In internal reports, the company acknowledges that the therapy, called applied behavior analysis, is the “evidence-based gold standard treatment for those with medically necessary needs.” But the company’s costs have climbed as the number of children diagnosed with autism has ballooned; experts say greater awareness and improved screening have contributed to a fourfold increase in the past two decades — from 1 in 150 to 1 in 36.
So Optum is “pursuing market-specific action plans” to limit children’s access to the treatment, the reports said. -

Judo was good; every workout in which my currently fragile and inflexible body is not injured is the best!Comments
At one point, I did think I hurt my shoulder. There was a new black belt at class, and I worked out with him. He was cool, but he kept on insisting that I do kuzushi properly and lift him off his heels.
The problem is, like almost everyone in class, he's like 20-30 lbs. heavier than me, and I'm not in the best shape right now. It is a lot of work for my shoulder to get him off-balance. My shoulder felt weird after a few sets of throws, so I switched to seoinage, even though tai otoshi was what we were trying to do. In fact, in general, I'm trying to avoid throws that need classical kuzushi because it's just way too much effort.
Anyway, it felt better later.
Endurance-wise, I got in some newaza randori (hooray for some breaks with white belts), and three rounds of standing randori. Still exhausting, as expected. It is going to be quite a while until I'm "normal". The only throws I landed were kouchi makikomi, which is reliable, but I need to develop at least one other reliable throw. I guess I also have osotogari, but only as a counter. -
I heard from a coworker who does Advent of Code every year that there is now drama. I don’t do it, but it always seemed like a friendly group puzzle-solving activity like Wordle, except harder. Each day, you get a programming problem, and you solve it (or not) and share your code.Comments
What’s the difference between this year and all of the previous years? LLMs.
The guy who runs AOC said people can’t use LLMs to qualify for the leaderboard. Weirdly, people got very angry about this and vowed to use LLMs. And of course, decided to harass AOC’s founder.
Now someone who consistently placed in the top ten has been pushed down to the seventies, and people who no one’s heard of are dominating the leaderboard with “amazing” times.
I have to say, programmers have always been problematic people, but they’ve gotten shittier over time. The money is the problem, as it often is. -
Well, I finally read about the the United Healthcare shooter.Comments
ocial profiles of Mangione have suggested support for right-wing thought and interest in forms of violent resistance, including the Unabomber, against liberal modernity. He also expressed or reposted concerns about secularization and the decline of Christianity in the Western World, fertility rates, DEI programs, and "wokeism" in society.[63][64] Other displayed interests included Asperger's Syndrome and Pokémon.[63]
I have to admit that I L'd OL when I saw that last sentence. -
We had our conference with the guy’s teacher today. She seems really good. But it’s weird how little you know about teachers at this age. You meet them at the beginning of the year, then you have two conferences. I guess if there’s obvious trouble you’d meet them more often.Comments
In kindergarten and first grade, we’d talk briefly almost every day at pickup (and during the pandemic, observe them every day over Zoom). -
It took me literally three hours to find presents for my nephews in the UK. Buying things is somehow a lot of labor, even though you're paying to do it.Comments
One amusing thing that came out of it was that the reason I couldn't get shipping on my order at Grand Illusions. I emailed the owner of the site, and he tried some things. After some back and forth, he figured out that the weight of Nitinol Inchworm was entered as 200 kg. Because I had that in my cart, the site wouldn't allow the cart to be shipped. It is acutally 200 g.
