I put out a single on Bandcamp: Clearing the Neighbourhood

I had it mostly finished around June and was planning to release it with another longer piece I'm working on, but I realized that I don't think anyone would want to hear a ten-minute piece after a forty-minute one, and that if it went first, it would set the wrong tone. So, I mixed it this week, Katt drew a cover for me, and now it's out on its own.

It's about the process by which a planet forms. The accumulating in the song is inspired by planetesimals gathering bits to itself.

I thought of one of the themes while on the metro in Montreal. But I ended wanting something calm and variable so it gradually stopped being a train song.

This is a piece that I like to listen to when I need to settle myself down to do something. I like to imagine a planet fragment building itself up. I don't always do whatever I intended, but I do get settled, FWIW.

JSON diff is pretty nice. You could pipe some `jq` command into `diff`, which is what Stack Overflow suggests, but this is just way easier to read. I had a change that made the impression that everything had changed, but it was just cascading changes from gaps being closed in what we supposed to be incremental numbers.

We went for a walk in the Fells, but mostly, we walked the Panther Rock, then the kids played some kind of imprisonment-related game for hours. We stood still in the cold, which is not recommended!

The brisket was OK, but not worth the effort. I wanted it to be blatantly smoky, but it was only subtly smoky. Also, the crust was impressive, but too salty. It makes me want to avoid the ends and just have the middle slices.

I think it’ll have a good second life being lightly recooked in other dishes, though.

I made some pretty good barbecue sauce. It’s a thin because I didn’t have time to reduce it more, but I like this this way. It’s more “restaurant-like.”

Green bean almondine turned out well. I think even more important than the almonds and garlic, though, is blanching the green beans then briefly sautéing them, rather than sautéing them the whole time. They end up really crisp this way.

I picked up the bass for the first time in about half a year. It's nice to play something you don't have much of a history with so you can avoid feeling bad about not being able to play stuff you used to be able to play. I should play a new instrument every year.

Robert Moses made some surprising slips in direct interviews with Robert Caro, even after trying to avoid talking to him for two years.
"We were opening a bathhouse at Sunken Meadow," Moses recalled. "We had cases of Scotch and bourbon that we were feeding to the fellows and Knight disappeared." Trying to enter the bathhouse, Moses said, he had found the door jammed, and when he finally pushed it open he discovered that what had been blocking it was Knight, who was sitting on the floor, dead drunk, trying to hold the door shut with his foot while he poured "a whole bottle" down his throat. "I said, 'You lousy bastard.? He was so embarrassed he didn't know what to say" —and thereafter, if Knight didn't formally change his mind, his fear of exposure led him to drastically soften his opposition.
