I planned to run on the treadmill, but once it got past eight, I lost the will to make myself do it. So, I did ten pull-ups and forty elastic band pulls, which of course is nothing like running. But it is something.Comments

Back workout, five deadlifts, eight pull-ups. I could probably do more weight on the deadlifts, but I’m taking it extra slow.Comments

Once a week I go to judo to work out myself, but most of the time, I take the guy to work out while I sit with a laptop. I normally don’t talk to anyone one, but today, I got in a conversation with a couple of parents from other countries (there are many of them at judo). I heard about things going on in Georgia (the country) and Korea.Comments
Georgia is trying to join the EU in two years, which is threatening to Putin. So, he’s turned the heat up on the influence and support of anti-EU factions. The college-age people in Georgia do not speak Russian, and Russian influence is alien and unwelcome to them. They’ve been maintaining a long-term protest.
There were roughly two hours between the declaration of martial law by the president of Korea and the annulment of it by the National Assembly. During that time, anything could have happened, especially to dissidents and journalists. Part of the reason Yoon is in power is that he still uses rhetoric about Communist spies being everywhere that older people that lived in the Korean War are attuned to, no matter how ridiculous it is. On the other hand, older people remember protesting for free elections, and they showed up this time, too. -

Splash pads really are fountains of fecal material; CDC reports 10K illnessesComments
Between 1997 and 2022, splash pads across the country were linked to at least 60 outbreaks, with the largest sickening over 2,000 water frolickers in one go. In all, the outbreaks led to at least 10,611 illnesses, 152 hospitalizations, and 99 emergency department visits. People, mostly children, were sickened with pathogens including Cryptosporidium, Camplyobacter jejuni, Giardia duodenalis, Salmonella, Shigella, and norovirus, according to the analysis, published Tuesday in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The tallies of outbreaks and illnesses are likely undercounts, given reporting delays and missed connections.

20%! Cambridge loves to talk about equality and inclusion, but they do things like that this that favor the wealthy and protect their wealth all the time. -
This was the first judo workout in which I neither injured a rib muscle nor retriggered that rib muscle injury. I did some oblique sit-ups yesterday, which tested and maybe strengthened ye old rib muscle. Or: it was just the passage of time. Either way, that’s my greatest judo victory of 2024.Comments
I did rip skin off my elbow again. I guess I should consider wearing a rash guard under the gi.
I try to do at least three rounds of tandoori each workout, but there were a lot of people, maybe fifteen? So, I let myself do just two. Still, someone once again asked me after class if I was OK, and I said yes, I’m just in really bad shape.
Earlier, the point was made that the way to close the distance for a throw is to first step to an angle at which the opponent’s balance is worse. Which I noticed myself last month but totally forgot. I tried to do it in randori, but again, it’s hard because the other guy also moves.
After trying harai goshi on a bigger guy again, I decided to put it away for a while. I don’t think I have the strength to consistently off- balance them so that they’re in their toes. I’m working on seoinage again, which only requires a downward-ish pull.
There was work on standing guard passes, too. I think the key insight here is do not let go of the opponent’s legs until you are ready to pin. If you let go early, they’ll move. -

If you didn't know, Korea currently has a Trump-like as president. People are calling for his impeachment, so he declared martial law.Comments
Accusing the opposition of what he called “anti-state activities,” Yoon said martial law is necessary to safeguard the constitutional order and to eliminate pro-North Korea forces in the nation.
Well, that's bad. I think he's trying to ride the authoritarian vibes picking up around the world.
The move came in response to the main opposition Democratic Party’s repeated attempts to impeach key government officials, according to Yoon.
Yoon said the opposition is paralyzing the government, noting that it impeached the interior minister as well as the head of the Korea Communications Commission and is now seeking to remove the defense minister, a number of prosecutors, and the chair of the Board of Audit and Inspection.
The president also blamed the Democratic Party for railroading a downsized budget through the parliamentary budget committee, saying this is damaging essential functions of the government, including the maintenance of law and order. -

I finished Free by Lea Ypi last week. It's about her childhood growing up in Albania. All the stuff about her parents letting her internalize ideas — for he own safety — that the dictatorship pushed was fascinating. So was a lot of the rest of it, like how a different kind of misery hit the country when capitalism was unleashed and how Western leftists would tell her she didn't grow up under "real" socialism.Comments
