So, Verizon increased my bill by $5, made me call in, then subjected me to some "additional services" pitches before finally saying "there's something we can do" and "re-enrolling" me so I can have the price I originally agreed to for another two years.Comments
$60/year isn't a crushing amount of money for me right now, but of course, it very well could be for people that can't take the time to call and insist that they revert the price change. Verizon isn't even the worst ISP in this regard; Comcast was around $90/month for us, and when they raised prices, there was truly nothing you could do.
But this business standard, which feels new-ish to me though I could be wrong, in which you only get what you agreed to if you have the time and energy to apply pressure to enforce it, disgusts me. -

Via k.t., today is Setsubun, which is when you throw beans at demons! If you live in DC, throw a few at the White House for me.Comments

From “Why Nations Fail”:Comments
Unlike in Mexico, in the United States the citizens could keep politicians in check and get rid of ones who would use their offices to enrich themselves or create monopolies for their cronies. In consequence, the banking monopolies crumbled. The broad distribution of political rights in the United States, especially when compared to Mexico, guaranteed equal access to finance and loans.
From today’s Financial Times:Elon Musk has vowed to unilaterally cancel hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of government grants after apparently gaining access to review the US Treasury’s vast payments system, a move that prompted the sudden resignation of one of the department’s most senior officials.

I think my knee is OK, but I'm giving it some more time just in case. Ten pull-ups, supermans (supermen?), side planks, oblique sit-ups, reverse flies, bent-over rows. Done.Comments

I had trouble finding out where the furniture at the library came from, so I made a FOIA request. I got back a spreadsheet of chairs they evaluated.Comments
It turns out that the chair we like is the Reframe Wingback, which has a base price of $4,800! I guess we're not getting one of those.
They haven't yet told me how much they actually paid for the chairs as part of their bulk purchase, so I'm following up on that. -

The CanaKit micro USB card reader is too cleverly designed. You put the micro SD card inside the USB connector.Comments
When the card gets jammed, it’s extremely stressful. Those cards are fragile, but you need a strong enough grip on them to get them unstuck. Online forums all tell you not to use anything metal, or you’ll break the card.
I tried some plastic tweezers, which did break off part of the card and then cast about for other options.
Eventually, I just used metal needlenose pliers, and I did get it out without breaking it. It was like a tiny version of deciding whether you’re going to be able to shoot the guy holding a hostage before they shoot the hostage. -

You know, it really sucks to hear from clowns like Trump, Hegseth, and the reality show guy he hired to be Secretary of Transportation after a bad airline crash. It's literal insult to injury to hear people who are so blatantly irresponsible (even if they weren't responsible for this) talk about something serious.Comments

I don't know a lot about sumo, and I thought it was mostly practiced only in Japan. It turns out there has not been a Japanese yokozuna since 1998. The last seven yokozuna have been Mongolian, and the one before that was Samoan Hawaiian.Comments

Uh, oh. My knee feels slightly crunchy. I can't do jumping jacks on it. I guess yesterday's workout wasn't as consequence-free as I thought. Maybe my dropdowns were a little too uncontrolled. Or people doing osotogari? Because it is my left knee.Comments

Katherine Rundell on early children’s books.Comments
Throughout the 1870s and 1880s, Tolstoy wrote stories for the children who lived on his family estate; they went on to become popular throughout Russia and summon up the same feelings of delight and warmth that you find in Anna Karenina’s suicide scene. There is a lion who tears apart a puppy, a tree cut down ‘screaming in unbearable pain’, a dead bird, a dead hare, another dead bird. There is a disputation on ‘why there is evil’, in which a hermit tells us that ‘from our bodies comes all the evil in the world.’ The blurb on the back of my edition says the stories will ‘captivate and delight children of all ages’, always assuming that those children have a more than usually potent appetite for dead puppies.

Well, it turns out newaza is an opportunity to rest if you're better than your opponent. Otherwise, it's exhausting to spend three minutes trying to escapea pin. It was worse than standing randori. I got through all of the breakfalls at the beginning of class without being tired and all of the practice throwing, then I hit that wall.Comments
I got thrown with osotogari several times, despite countering a bunch of them. I guess I just have to be very ready to counter. In the forward throw department, I actually threw with uchimata. Kind of amazing. -

Due to my parents not having cable, I never saw the video for Megadeth's Hangar 18. Someone posted a digitization of a VHS tape of some '90s metal and rap videos he recorded off of TV. OMG, that Vic Rattlehead costume. Hilarious and also kind of wholesome and handmade-looking.Comments
