An A.I. code review comment:Comments
The email validation regex on line __ is insufficient and may allow certain malformed email addresses. For example, it would accept emails with multiple @ symbols
I thought, hey, nice catch!
Then, I looked at the regex, and no, there is no way it would allow multiple @ symbols. It looked for that literal once and the rest of the regex looked for repetitions of alphanumeric characters.
But yeah, statistically, when you see an email regex what often follows is a comment about how it has a problem, so LLM-wise, it was just doing its thing, right? -
Huh, "data visualization" jobs these days, at least according to job listings, seem to be all about using Tableau and PowerBI. As was foretold eight years ago!Comments

The orchestra director recommended private cello lessons for the guy. They're $60 for 30 minutes. That's even more than piano lessons cost.Comments
Judo, by contrast, is about $1.50 per half hour, if you go three days a week, 50 weeks a year. Although, it can jump to about double that if you travel to two tournaments a year. And it isn't private. But I say: still! -

All of Bali: Music from the Morning of World is good, and most of it is gamelan. Kecak Dance, though, is my favorite track, and it's a cappella. That's a lot of rhythmic coordination. They sound like an instrument together.Comments

Back workout, 2x8 deadlifts, three very light (60 lbs.) power cleans?Comments
I think I did the cleans right? The weight was so light that I could have had all sorts of things wrong, and I'd still be able to get the bar to my chest. I guess I'll bump it up slightly next time. - Comments

I almost just bought an album from Nonesuch Records. I had filled out my credit card information. Below that part of the form, there was a notice that I agreed that Warner Music Group was not letting me own these mp3s, but rather giving me a license to use them. It then linked to terms of use that said:Comments
Personal Computers: You may not activate any audio track purchased or obtained via the Site on more than three (3) traditional personal computers.
So, I just closed the tab and ran yt-dlp.
CD Burning: You may not make more than seven (7) burns of a particular playlist (such as an album) to a CD.
Portable Devices: You may not transfer audio tracks purchased or obtained via the Site from personal computers to more than three (3) traditional portable devices (or to any cellular telephone or other device capable of cellular or WAP communication). -

We need you to take 5 minutes right now and demand that the Department of Education (1) not cut grants for mental health services, and (2) stay committed to its responsibility of creating safe and healthy environments for all students.
The form is really well-designed, and it does indeed take less than five minutes to submit comments.
…
The Department of Education recently proposed TWO new rules that would negatively impact mental health services for transgender students. The proposed rules would impose new restrictions on the use of federal funds under two mental health grant programs.
These grants programs support professional development of mental health providers in schools. If finalized, the rule would prohibit the use of funds for “promoting or endorsing gender ideology, political activism, racial stereotyping, or hostile environments for students of particular races” and impact the recruitment and training of mental health providers. As a result, these restrictions will undermine the access to and quality of mental health care services received by transgender students, especially trans students of color. Trans students already face dramatic disparities in mental health compared to their peers due to external stressors like bullying and social stigmatization. - Comments

Did a light judo workout, then a sixteen-minute run, eleven pull-ups.Comments
The judo workout was courtesy of a sensei who also had a kid in the kids’ class. He spent a lot of time fixing my issues with kouchi gari, and I felt kind of bad about it because he didn’t get as much time to work on his own stuff. So, strangely, this nice opportunity just felt like too much? Maybe next time I can make sure he works on his own stuff more.
I was thinking about working on morote seoinage, and another sensei just kept it real and said I’m not the type for that — I’m not tall, but I am “tall” for my weight, and I’m not powerful. I’m glad he said that. It does indeed make sense. So, I’ll pick stuff to focus on that’s less of a stretch for me. -

Net Cafe, PBS show from 1996 about the internet. Look at those UIs!Comments
It's a little sad, though, when they talk optimistically about about "breaking the monopoly on access to information," just assuming that's going to be all good and that no new monopolies will appear. -
The US has doubled a reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to $50m (£37.2m), accusing him of being "one of the largest narco-traffickers in the world".Comments
Bizarre and stupid as usual, sadly, but this was an interesting tidbit:But in June, Hugo Carvajal - formerly the head of Venezuela's military intelligence - was convicted of several drug trafficking charges after being arrested in Madrid and put on trial in the US.
(Emphasis added.)
Carvajal had been a feared spymaster who went by the name El Pollo, or The Chicken, but fled Venezuela after calling on the army to back an opposition candidate and overthrow Maduro. -
I'm sure I'll see something glaring tomorrow, but I got through a couple of passes of updating my company site and my resume. Let me know if you see anything off there.Comments
I literally took three days to do this because I hated doing it, so it was a grind to make myself marketable.
And yet, I bet it won't make much of a difference in the job search process. - Comments

Poland and Brazil offer lessons for rebuilding in the wake of illiberal leaders.Comments
It is interesting to know how recovery is going (and not going) in Poland and Brazil, but I think we're "ahead" of them on the timeline in that we had an anti-democratic president, voted him out, and then he came back again. In Poland, they just got to the authoritarian returning to power, and in Brazil they're not there yet (and hopefully won't be). So, while the problems in the article will be the same in the US (assuming there's not a third Trump term, which we can't actually sanely assume, but we'll put that aside for now), those countries don't quite work as a model. -

While headlines often focus on Iran’s nuclear ambitions or its proxy wars, the real existential threat lies beneath the surface—literally. The regime that once showcased its engineering prowess with dam-building and water transfer projects now presides over a broken hydrological system. Rivers have dried up. Lakes have disappeared. Aquifers are collapsing.
As Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian bluntly admitted in July: “The water crisis is more serious than what is being discussed today.” He added that “Tehran is running out of water, and if this continues, we won’t be able to supply the city.”
