The "random band" link on metal-archives is good times.Comments
Some recent band name finds:
- Please Remember. A memorable name! The guy in the lower left seems particularly concerned about being remembered.
- Herbert. Herbert!
- Brain Ass. Makes u think
- Isn't. Which band is it? It is Isn't.
- Orion Belt. I misread this as "Onion Belt" and was disappointed to read it correctly. -

Anton Podviaznikov, a Recurse Center alum, is matching donations to Ukraine. So, if you donate $100, he'll donate $100.Comments
And maybe just as useful, he (a Ukrainian) has guidance on which organizations are effective ones to donate to. Having lost the US to because Trump has some strange desire to be admired by Putin, they're going to need all the help they can get to survive an incredibly blatant Spanish-colonizer-style invasion until Europe can get it together militarily. -
Via Dan, this guy got Doom running in the TypeScript type checker. (Though, by "running," he means producing pixel buffers, but not actually getting them to display, which is out of reach, it seems.) Still, it's the TypeScript type checker doing the execution, not TypeScript code. That is some amazing manipulation.Comments

A.I. AND THE FETISHIZATION OF IDEASComments
And herein lies the problem with the sudden surge and interest in artificial intelligence. AI-generated creativity isn’t creativity. It is all hat, no cowboy: all idea, no execution. It in fact relies on the obsession with, and fetishization of, THE IDEA. It’s the core of every get-rich-quick scheme, the basis of every lazy entrepreneur who thinks he has the Next Big Thing, the core of every author or artist or creator who is a “visionary” who has all the vision but none of the ability to execute upon that vision. Hell, it’s the thing every writer has heard from some jabroni who tells you, “I got this great idea, you write it, we’ll split the money 50/50, boom.” It is the belief that The Idea is of equal or greater importance than the effort it takes to make That Idea a reality.
Remember when iPhone apps were new, and tons of people thought they’d be rich if they just got a programmer to “punch it up on the computer” because they had a genius idea? They didn’t realize that “punching it up” was more important to how software works than the idea.
The same goes for art. The making of the art is more important than the concept. You, like, Gustav Holst, could also say, there should be a symphony in which each movement embodies the vibe of each planet in the solar system. Mars is aggressive, Neptune is mysterious, etc. But you could not come up with a symphony that with the same nature and power because it does matter how you “punch it up.”
Even when the idea seems really strong, the actual making of the art is way more important. What if a record exec came up with the concept of these guys from the projects in Staten Island who imagined it as Shaolin and connected kung-fu movie concepts to street life and rapped about it? Pretty strong idea, right?
So what if that exec just hired some guys to make an album to implement that idea, boy band style? We could even suppose that the rappers they hired were really good, like Kool G Rap, Guru, and Snoop Dogg. Would that album be 36 Chambers?
No. It might be interesting, but it wouldn’t have the heart or the depth because who makes something and how it is made defines the work first and foremost. The idea is just the first of a million decisions that go into a work. -
The main problem with our newer Roomba is that it constantly stops because it thinks the dust bin is full when in fact it is not. (The older one doesn't charge because apparently newer iRobot batteries blow a fuse in older iRobot products?)Comments
I was looking for hacks to turn off the dust bin sensor and found out that you can actually just turn it off in the app. Amazing. I just assumed iRobot would never let their customers do this.
It is still a bad product, but it may actually be usable now. -
Turns out I still need this bit of code, which I thought had been taken care of by optional chaining. The thing optional chaining doesn't do is array access, though.Comments

More consequences of an ideal Jerry Springer guest being presidentComments
Zelenskyy’s main objective going into the sit-down had been to press Trump not to abandon his country and to warn against moving too close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Instead he got shouted at while Trump appeared to play up the drama for the cameras.

Military control: The full takeover of US security agencies—the FBI, the CIA, the military, and others—by Trump loyalists is more or less complete now. They are just mopping up the last disgruntled insiders at this point. If you still believe that traditional norms against using the military domestically or launching FBI investigations for purely political reasons will be respected going forward, please abandon those beliefs at once. The FBI’s primary business now will be attacking Trump’s domestic enemies. It will be more crude and more overt than what happened under J. Edgar Hoover. On top of that, I will bet a dollar that the US military will be called out against protesters in this country before the end of the year.
One of the reasons that Yoon’s attempt at insurrection in Korea via a martial law order didn’t work was that the military didn’t go along with it. Some high-ranking generals skipped out entirely, and the special forces sent to block off the National Assembly let members just walk around to a back entrance.
I don’t think we have that kind of military now. -

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) began the process of firing hundreds of probationary workers Thursday, the latest mass job cuts within federal agencies, multiple sources with knowledge of internal operations told The Hill.Comments
NOAA is an example of something really valuable that cannot be achieved without a government. There is no way any private company could or would be motivated to gather and process that kind of data. If it’s dismantled, it’s going to be very hard to restore to its current capability.

Vesuvius turned a guy’s brain to glass.Comments
While his neighbors frantically fled from their oncoming doom, one man stayed in bed. For whatever reason, he didn’t join the other 2000 residents of Herculaneum—the ancient Roman city just north of Pompeii—as they ran from erupting Mount Vesuvius.

Călin Georgescu, who received the most votes in the annulled 2024 presidential election, is detained by police and taken for questioning by the general prosecutor's office over allegations of false statements about financing sources, illegal possession of weapons, and forming an organization that is "fascist, racist, or xenophobic".Comments
On 4 December 2024, Romanian president Klaus Iohannis declassified and published Romanian intelligence agency documents, which stated that Georgescu's growth was "not organic" and was funded and coordinated by a "state actor". Iohannis declassified the documents at the request of the intelligence agencies. The documents said that Georgescu's advertising campaign slogan "Balance and verticality" was in its methodology identical to an earlier TikTok campaign slogan "Brother near brother" purchased by Russian actors and targeting Ukraine. Romanian media said that the person who funded the Georgescu campaign was a right-wing supporter named Eugen Sechila. The documents said that the campaign was coordinated through Telegram and Discord channels, where advice was given to participants on how to bypass TikTok security mechanisms, avoid geoblocking and bans for comment spam. One involved account "bogpr" identified as registered for a Romanian citizen Bogdan Peșchir, made donations to other TikTok accounts of over €1 million, including €381,000 to accounts directly involved in promoting Georgescu's campaign. The South African advertising company FA Agency contacted a number of TikTok influencers and offered €1,000 for promoting Georgescu's videos. In total, over 25,000 accounts were involved in promoting these videos.[54][55] The Constitutional Court annulled the results of the election on 6 December.
That is nicely done, Romanian government. Don’t let the Russian government run you over. -

An unknown illness kills over 50 people in part of Congo with hours between symptoms and deathComments
An unknown illness first discovered in three children who ate a bat has rapidly killed more than 50 people in northwestern Congo over the past five weeks, health experts say.
That is not a disease the world, especially the US, is going to be able to handle if it spreads.
The interval between the onset of symptoms – which include fever, vomiting and internal bleeding – and death has been 48 hours in most cases and “that’s what’s really worrying,” said Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital, a regional monitoring center.
