According to a poll by the Peruvian Research and Marketing Company conducted in 1997, 40.6% of Lima residents considered President Fujimori an authoritarian. 40.6%!Comments
So back in 1992 (from How Democracies Die):The conflict escalated. Fujimori accused congress of being controlled by drug traffickers, and in response, the senate passed a motion to "vacate" the presidency because of Fujimor's "moral incapacity." Although the motion fell a few votes short in the Chamber of Deputies, the conflict had reached a point where one government official worried that
"either the Congress would kill the President, or the President would kill the Congress."
The president killed congress. On April 5, 1992, Fujimori appeared on television and announced that he was dissolving congress and the constitution. Less than two years after his surprising election, the long-shot outsider had become a tyrant. -

Kit Collins: My response to the resolution on Antisemitism and Pro-Palestinian ActivismComments
To specifically mourn the 1,200 Israelis murdered by Hamas on October 7, 2023, but with no acknowledgement of the over 62,000 Palestinians murdered since then in Gaza by the IDF – which, according to the Lancet Medical Journal, could be under-counted by up to 40% – and does not even include the over 100,000 people who have died of starvation and disease in Gaza, and does not include Palestinians murdered by extremist Israeli settler terrorism in the West Bank – that is participating in the dehumanization that allows this genocide to continue unchecked.
Medford is nice in that it has only one blatantly terrible councilor: Scarpelli. And he introduced this resolution slipping in several lies mixed in with what appears to be conciliatory language not long after Rumyesa Ozturk was abducted for writing this really mild op-ed in support of people protesting for Palestinians.
And to affirm Israel’s right to exist while failing to mention Palestine’s right to exist is offensive to Palestinians in our community and perpetuates a false, unhelpful, right-wing ideology. It is incredibly radical to suggest, as this resolution does, that the Palestinians “lack a permanent homeland.” The City of Medford cannot be in the business of normalizing this objectively fringe and right-wing opinion. -
I’m at the America chapter of How Democracy Dies now.Comments
For Republicans entering the general election of 2016, the implications were clear. If Trump threatened basic democratic principles, they had to stop him. To do anything else would put democracy at risk, and losing democracy is far worse than losing an election. This meant doing what was, to many, the unthink-able: backing Hillary Clinton for president. The United States has a two-party system; only two candidates stood a chance to win the 2016 election, and one of them was a demagogue. For Republicans, it tested their political courage. Would they ac-cept short-term political sacrifice for the good of the country?
Well, I didn’t think about it much back then, but as far back as 2008 or maybe even 1996, plenty of people, including me, knew that, of course the Republicans would choose winning over maintaining a democracy. That should have been a warning that was heeded with action, but you would have looked crazy if you said democracy is at stake at that point.
As we showed carlier, there is a precedent for such behavior.
In 2016, Austran conservatives backed Green Party candidate
Alexander Van der Bellen to prevent the election of far-right radical Norbert Hofer. And in 2017, defeated French conserva-tive candidate François Fillon called on his partisans to vote for center-left candidate Emmanuel Macron to keep far-right candidate Marine Le Pen out of power. In both these cases, right-wing politicians endorsed ideological rivals-angering much of the party base but redirecting substantial numbers of their voters to keep extremists out of power. -

K2-18b is two and a half times the size of Earth and is seven hundred trillion miles away from us.
Whoa. But also:
JWST is so powerful that it can analyse the chemical composition of the planet's atmosphere from the light that passes through from the small red Sun it orbits.
The Cambridge group has found that the atmosphere seems to contain the chemical signature of at least one of two molecules that are associated with life: dimethyl sulphide (DMS) and dimethyl disulphide (DMDS). On Earth, these gases are produced by marine phytoplankton and bacteria."Even with that certainty, there is still the question of what is the origin of this gas," she told BBC News.
If it ends up being just a finding that organic compounds can be found on other planets, that's still amazing. -

What do these athletes see in Trump? He is a wrestler’s opposite in nearly every way. Though he has a weird habit of trying to dominate handshakes, he’s never been a serious athlete, despite his boasts. His privilege has shielded him from accountability throughout his life. Among high-level wrestlers, personal accountability is a deep, almost spiritual core value.
I have seen this said about combat sports in general. It's a mistake – it's actually not masculine at all. Plenty of women do them and are good at them. Like the article says, girls' wrestling is growing rapidly. Do not cede martial arts and/or combat sports to the chuds.
…
In 2016, The New Yorker published The Faces of College Wrestlers, which featured portraits taken after wrestlers had stepped off the mat. I was delighted until I read the article’s comment section on Facebook. With articulate prose, people had reduced these young men to knuckle-dragging stereotypes. The phrase “toxic masculinity” appeared multiple times. -

Today was a good day to return to judo because it was all footsweeps, which are frustrating because they're timing-centric and I have a tough time with them, but they also do not use up as much energy. And that is probably a good reason for older people with bad conditioning to try to get better at them.Comments
I still got tired during all-footsweep randori, though. Four rounds, and I had to take a break. I think I landed one footsweep during that whole time.
Sadly, someone messed up his knee tonight. I always go in all braced up and do not fight off falls very hard in attempt to reduce the chance of injury, but things can still happen, even if they don't happen very often. Someone can accidentally hit you on the side of the knee in a certain way, and there it'll go.
He is a fairly young guy, though, so he has good chances at a good recovery, I'd guess. We walked him to his car, and I noticed that the floor of the passenger seat was entire covered in empty takeout coffee cups. Classic young guy stuff! -

Yesterday, a parent at judo that was planning to stay in the US for a few years while working on her graduate degree remarked that she and her family might cut things short and leave this summer. That's sad. She and her kid are really nice. But of course, I completely understand. Who wants to be abducted for somehow offending the right wing? -
