But the memory that stood out for the two anonymous BB&N students who knew Lewin was a 2013 incident in which “Lewin took one of the cafeteria’s porcelain bowls and smashed it against a kid’s head.” One of the sources dated the incident to Sept. 4, 2013, based on a text message from another student which read, “Bye Jeremy Lewin.” Lewin was suspended, “but not for too long,” the sources said.

On 28 March 2025 at 12:50:52 MMT (06:20:52 UTC), a Mw 7.7 earthquake struck the Sagaing Region of Myanmar, with an epicenter close to Mandalay, the country's second-largest city. The strike-slip shock achieved a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent).[2] It was the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912,[3] and the second deadliest in Myanmar's modern history, surpassed only by upper estimates of the 1930 Bago earthquake.[4]

The code review company I work for has started putting AI summaries in for each file changed in the pull request. It often says something like:
No differences were observed between the old and new versions of the code. Both files contain identical JavaScript code for processing and formatting chart data.
And yet there often are differences, highlighted by their non-AI diff tool, in fact.

The project is being organized by Elon Musk lieutenant Steve Davis, multiple sources who were not given permission to talk to the media tell WIRED, and aims to migrate all Social Security Administration systems off COBOL, one of the first common business-oriented programming languages, and onto a more modern replacement like Java within a scheduled tight timeframe of a few months.

A few months. That is how long it would take to migrate a system like this from one version of Java to another.

This is, of course, the point. There is no downside for Elon. At worst, you keep millions of retirees from getting the money they put into the system, which is fine by him.

I liked this handmade sign. This bumper sticker disavowing Elon, though, makes me suspicious. I could see a lot of dictator-friendly Tesla owners getting these in the same way people buy stickers saying there’s an alarm system.

I started the Revolutions podcast season about the French Revolution while undergoing my gum grafts. Episode 3.4 is largely about Jacques Necker, who was put in charge of the Ancien Regime’s (the pre-revolution monarchy) treasury, which was in bad shape. I was surprised to learn that the concept of the “financial wizard” existed even back in the 1780s. Intense income problems? Just send a financial wizard after it!

Necker did some financial wizardry, all right. Chief among his feats was publishing a public budget which showed that the regime actually had a surplus. He did this by classifying a bunch of expenses as “extraordinary” and not including them in the publication. Wizardry!

As we know, there is a lot of scamming you can get away at the top levels of government sometimes.
