Back workout, 2x8 deadlifts.Comments
I was loathe to do it, but I recorded myself doing shadow tai otoshi, seioinage, and uchimata. The first two were OK, but I am not raising my leg nor lowering my torso much at all in uchimata. I had no idea. So, that's handy to know. -

Foreigners might want to avoid Logan Airport for the next four yearsComments
Despite a court order, Customs and Border Protection had a Providence doctor with an H1-B visa detained as she arrived at Logan from a visit with her parents in Lebanon and immediately sent back there.
A New Hampshire man with a green card was detained by immigration officers at Logan Airport and is being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Donald W. Wyatt detention facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island.
ICE is torturing permanent residents now.
…
“It was just said that his green card was flagged,” said Astrid Senior, his mother. She said she didn’t hear from her son directly until Tuesday, when she learned he’d been hospitalized.
Senior described Schmidt being “violently interrogated” at Logan Airport for hours, and being stripped naked, put in a cold shower by two officials, and being put back onto a chair.
She said Schmidt told her immigration agents pressured him to give up his green card. She said he was placed on a mat in a bright room with other people at the airport, with little food or water, suffered sleep deprivation, and was denied access to his medication for anxiety and depression. -

Did some rolling breakfalls by the river. It was softer than the floor, but afterward it occurred to me I could have hit a rock. So, probably not advisable. -

The 200+ Sites an ICE Surveillance Contractor is MonitoringComments
A contractor for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and many other U.S. government agencies has developed a tool that lets analysts more easily pull a target individual’s publicly available data from a wide array of sites, social networks, apps, and services across the web at once, including Bluesky, OnlyFans, and various Meta platforms, according to a leaked list of the sites obtained by 404 Media. In all the list names more than 200 sites that the contractor, called ShadowDragon, pulls data from and makes available to its government clients, allowing them to map out a person’s activity, movements, and relationships.
People need to be careful about being identifiable on social media. And if they are identifiable (even if you use an alias, if your email is associated with the account, you can be identified because I wouldn't trust these companies to protect them all that well), they need to be careful about what they say or like.
The news comes after ICE detained Mahmoud Khalil, a prominent Columbia University protester and green card holding legal permanent resident of the U.S., on Saturday with the intention of deporting him. It also comes as Secretary of State Marco Rubio is reportedly launching an AI-fueled “Catch and Revoke” effort to scan the social media accounts for tens of thousands of student visa holders’ social media accounts, looking for what Axios reported as foreign nationals who appear to support Hamas or other designated terror groups.
Speaking of which, I've never considered turning JS off in my browser because it would be incredibly inconvenient, but this post has me considering using NoScript.Facebook and TikTok had been given access to read what medication I'm on by the development team responsible for the Pharmacy2U web site.
Get uBlock Origin, too, if you're not using it.
On the phone, I rely on the Pi-Hole to block a whole bunch of stuff for everyone on the wi-fi.
I will face up to the fact that this all seems like way too much work for most people, and some of them are going to face unfortunate consequences, and all of us will probably face aggregate consequences as a result. -
Recording Reveals Head of Social Security’s Thoughts on DOGE and TrumpComments
For 25 years, he was the ultimate faceless bureaucrat: a midlevel analyst who had bounced between federal agencies, ultimately landing at the Social Security Administration and focusing on information technology, cybersecurity and fraud prevention. He was largely unknown even within the agency. But in February, he suddenly vaulted into the public eye when he was put on leave for surreptitiously sharing information with DOGE. It appeared that he might lose his job, but then he was unexpectedly promoted by the Trump administration to the position of acting commissioner.
This head of Social Security, who’s basically taking it apart, made a weird self-pitying speech to the department. It reminds of stuff you used to see on LiveJournal. -

From Vaclav Smil’s Numbers Don’t Lie:Comments
But the doubling time for transistor density is no guide to technical progress generally. Modern life depends on many processes that improve rather slowly, not least the production of food and energy and the transportation of people and goods— and such slow rates prevail not only for pre-19so advances but also for essential improvements and innovation coinciding with the development of transistors (their first commercial application was in hearing aids in 1952).
He then lists the rates of improvement in staple crop yields, power generators, intercontinental travel, steel costs, which all improve at 1.5%-3% year, which is very different from Moore’s Law, in which semiconductors get better at a rate of 35% a year. I agree with his point about life not improving at the rate of digital technology’s progress. -
Judo tonight was less intense, surprisingly. A lot of drilling seoinage and osotogari, which don't use up a lot of energy for me.Comments
There was only time for three rounds of randori at the end. I usually like to get in three rounds, but with breaks in between. So, I went one round, then I did a light round with someone that was just getting back into judo. I feel like I should have done the three consecutive rounds since it's my only chance all week to build my anaerobic stamina, but then again, my left hip was sore, so maybe that's OK.
I had a lot of trouble moving larger opponents last time. Today, I tried stepping outside of their left with my right foot, then rotating them clockwise. It worked. I couldn't capitalize on it (the only throw I landed with a counter o-goshi), but the larger partner I tried it on was moving and off-balance. Pretty encouraging!
A weird occurrence: At one point, there were five dudes in the changing room, and some "locker room talk" happened. And by "locker room talk," I mean complaining about the nonsensicalness of software engineering interviews. I did not expect to hear about Leetcode in the judo club.
When I hear people talking about going rock climbing, I assume they're software engineers. Maybe there is also overrepresentation in grappling? -

One of the tiniest things among the many things that suck these days is that Firefox wants you to have a valid manifest when you try to load an add-on. When it's not valid, the only thing it tells you is that your add-on is corrupt.Comments
They don't provide any sort of validator. The only way you can get more detail about what may be wrong with your extension is by submitting it to the Add-Ons Developer Hub, which involves you getting a Firefox account, which forces you to use 2FA via an authenticator app.
That is a lot to learn that Firefox can't find the manifest in your zip structure. (Protip: Use `zip -j` to build a zip with no subdirectories in it.) -
