An odd incident from the memoir of Lt. John Worsham of the 21st Virginia Infantry — during the Battle of Saunders Field in May 1864, two opposing soldiers found themselves in a gully and agreed to a fistfight to decide which had captured the other:
Fist and skull fight!
Then they decided that they would go into the road and have a regular fist and skull fight, the best man to have the other as his prisoner. -
I was just listening to my "Riffs" Plex playlist on shuffle, and I found myself quite pumped up, so I thought I'd post the last four tracks in case anyone else needs some pumping up.Comments

Just a week into President Donald Trump’s second term, Rep. Adriano Espaillat began to see reports of Puerto Ricans and others being questioned and arrested by immigration agents. So Espaillat, a New York Democrat, did what members of Congress often do: He wrote to the administration and demanded answers. That was more than 10 weeks ago. Espaillat has not received a response.
Once again, other than hoping the military somehow gets involved because of its oath about the Constitution, there is little recourse here.
His experience appears to be common.
At least a dozen members of Congress, all Democrats, have written to the Trump administration with pointed questions about constituents and other citizens whom immigration agents have questioned, detained and even held at gunpoint. In one letter, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee demanded a list of every citizen detained during the new administration.
None has received an answer.
“What we are clearly seeing is that with this administration, they are not responding to congressional inquiries,” said Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, a New Mexico Democrat. -

American Rendition: Rümeysa Öztürk’s Journey From Ph.D. Scholar to Trump Target Languishing in Louisiana CellComments
During the visit, E. said, the women broke their fast together and visited a mosque for late-night Ramadan prayers. They stopped by a children’s library Öztürk wanted to visit. They stayed up late talking, gaming out how to keep Öztürk safe from the Trump administration’s crackdown.
“She said, ‘I think this is going to be the last time I get to visit you,’” E. recalled. “I told her, ‘No, no, you’re going to be able to come again, don’t worry, and I’m going to come visit you.’ That all turned out to be wrong.” - Comments

How Democracies Die has a lot about the paradox of democratic gatekeeping.Comments
The Collier's editors observed that fall:
Most ridiculous, indeed.
When Democratic [Party] chieftains are asked:
"What about Ford?" they all shrug their shoulders.
Almost without a single exception the men who constitute what is usually known as the "organization" in every State are opposed to Ford. In all the States except where there are presidential primaries these men practically hand-pick the delegates to the national con-ventions. ... Nobody denies the amount of Ford sentiment among the masses of the people-Democratic and Republican. Every Democratic leader knows his State is full of it—and he is afraid of it. He thinks, however, that because of the machinery of selection of delegates there is little likelihood that Ford will make much of a showing.
Despite popular enthusiasm for his candidacy, Ford was effectively locked out of contention. Senator James Couzens called the idea of his candidacy ridiculous. "How can a man over sixty years old, who ... has no training, no experience, aspire to such an office?" he asked. "It is most ridiculous."
There were several American authoritarians besides Henry Ford that enjoyed Trump-like popularity. This was before open primaries started in the ‘70s. Instead, party leaders just picked candidates, so those guys had no chance.
There’s obviously problems with that. No one elected those guys to be gatekeepers, and they were not very accountable.
Also, is it democratic to restrict choice to only candidates that aren’t going to end democracy? Father Coughlin was against democracy and elections, and at one point, a third of the US population listened to his show. At times, the will of the people is to not have democracy.
I can only say that I would prefer to live in a self-perpetuating democracy, even if that’s not the truest possible philosophical democracy. I like Canada’s system in which it is explicitly clear that you are electing MPs that will select presidential candidates. It is gatekeeping, but you know you’re selecting a gatekeeper, and the gatekeepers’ votes are open and public, not confined to a classic smoke-filled room. -
There are probably people making an arbitrage killing in countries that are not the US and China by just buying things from China, marking them up by 75% or so, and selling them to the US.Comments

From “How Democracies Die”:Comments
If authoritarians are to be kept out, they first have to be identi-fied. There is, alas, no foolproof advance warning system. Many authoritarians can be easily recognized before they come to power. They have a clear track record: Hitler led a failed putsch;
Then it goes on to explain how you can handle that harder second case. The funny thing is, we actually have the easier first case, and we still fucked up.
Chávez led a failed military uprising; Mussolin's Blackshirts engaged in paramilitary violence; and in Argentina in the mid-twentiet century, Juan Perón helped lead a successful coup two and a half years before running for president.
But politicians do not always reveal the full scale of their authoritarianism before reaching power. Some adhere to democratic norms early in their careers, only to abandon them later. -

I got a 34/38 on the reading comprehension part of the CELPIP practice test. That would give me a CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) level of 10-12, which at is least "effective" in workplace contexts.Comments
I think I only need a CLB of 7 ("Adequate proficiency in workplace and community contexts"). However, a 7 will only get you 4 points on the immigration score, whereas a 10 will get you a 6. So, I'd need to score that, but also do well on the other three test sections, including listening. -
Non-transitive diceComments
This is cool. What makes it easier to understand is if you think of it as rock-paper-scissor, but with three rocks of different ranks (the 4, 5, and 6). Even then, it is surprising that you can arrange the probabilities so that each die can lose to one other and beat one other. -
The problem with Flooding is that the middle is the best part, I can’t just skip the first part because that’s what make the middle good and because it would misrepresent the data to a degree.Comments
