How a Saudi royal crushed his rivals in a 'shakedown' at the Ritz-CarltonComments
But a year ago Sunday, on Nov. 4, 2017, the ultra-luxurious Riyadh hotel — with its marble floors and vast indoor swimming pool — became a gilded prison, when hundreds of Saudi royals, billionaires and senior government officials were detained in an extraordinary power play by the heir to the throne, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
They took at least $106.7bn. I had no idea this had even happened.
The involuntary guests were told they had to sign away large chunks of their assets to be released. The detention involved both psychological abuse and — in some cases — torture, current and former U.S. officials say. -

We want to order from Number One Taste in Arlington.Comments
Here are the search results I'm getting:
- https://www.numberonetastearlington.com/
They all have the same phone number listed. TripAdvisor links to Facebook page that links to the first URL, so I guess that's most likely it?
I called them after ordering, and they did get my order, so it did work. Are the other ones domain squatters/phishers, or did they just domain squat themselves? The lady on the phone said number1arlington.com is their site when I asked, but she didn't sound too sure. -

They spoke early Saturday morning, a conversation in which Mr. Trump has said he brought up the National Guard. (Mr. Newsom said that was false, calling the president a “stone-cold liar.”)
But Mr. Trump then told reporters he called Mr. Newsom a second time, on Monday, to admonish him. Mr. Newsom says a Monday call never happened.
The president “starts making up all these things he claimed he told me about, which honestly starts to disturb me on a different level,” Mr. Newsom said. “Maybe he actually believed he said those things, and he’s not all there. I mean that.”
Mr. Newsom added: “He claimed he had another conversation with me. So there’s something going on here.” -

Naked mole-rats can live longer than any other rodent, with lifespans in excess of 37 years; the next longest-lived rodent is the African porcupine at 28 years.[38][39][40] The mortality rate of the species does not increase with age, and thus does not conform to that of most mammals (as frequently defined by the Gompertz-Makeham law of mortality).[40] Naked mole-rats are highly resistant to cancer,[41] and maintain healthy vascular function longer in their lifespan than shorter-living rats.[42] Queens age more slowly than nonbreeders.[43]

Four Thousand Weeks on the effects of on-demand gig economy work and flex time:Comments
All this comes with political implications, too, because grassroots politics-the world of meetings, rallies, pro-tests, and get-out-the-vote operations are among the most important coordinated activities that a desynchronized population finds it difficult to get around to doing. The result is a vacuum of collective action, which gets filled by autocratic leaders, who thrive on the mass support of people who are otherwise disconnected-alienated from one another, stuck at home on the couch, a captive audience for televised pro-paganda. "Totalitarian movements are mass organizations of atomized, isolated individuals," wrote Hannah Arendt in The Origins of Totalitarianism. It's in the interests of an autocrat that the only real bond among his supporters should be their support for him.
Most of the book is just “use your time well; productivity isn’t going to make you happy,” which is true but doesn’t need that many pages to explain it. This chapter on people becoming desynchronized from each other is a break from that. It talks about how the Russians during the 1930s tried splitting all people into five groups, giving each of the five groups a different day off so that 80% of the people were working at any given time. They hated it. -

Daniel Ziblatt:Comments
In 1932, the conservative chancellor Franz von Papen lifted Weimar era ban on the SA (browshirts) causing street fights & unrest in the cities of Germany's biggest state, Prussia, the stronghold of Social Democratic opposition. In reaction to the unrest, the chancellor then declared state of emergency, allowing the federal government to usurp power away from the state and "federalize" power. The Social Democratic led state of Prussia challenged this in court -- but the conservative national government won with the
soon to be infamous Carl Schmitt arguing its case. -
I was just listening to an episode of the Revolutions podcast that discussed the Infernal Columns.Comments
With 80,000 soldiers, he ordered 12 "infernal columns" to sweep the Vendée, taking away all crops, burning farms and killing all suspected rebels. Not even women and children were spared from massacre. Turreau was encouraged in his horrible work by politicians such as Jean-Baptiste Carrier who said, "The women of La Vendée, it is from them that the race of enemies is reborn. The children, they are vipers to be crushed", and, "We will make a cemetery of France".[21]
