The woman who doesn't feel painComments
Jo Cameron only realises her skin is burning when she smells singed flesh. She often burns her arms on the oven, but feels no pain to warn her.
That's because she is one of only two people in the world known to have a rare genetic mutation.
It means she feels virtually no pain, and never feels anxious or afraid. - Comments

Black bear hibernationComments
Female bears give birth during hibernation and nurse their cubs through a period of helplessness. The female “hibernates” throughout the entire process, and unless disturbed, she will not leave the den until she brings her cubs out of the den in the spring. By that time, the cubs can walk and follow the mother as she feeds.
So productive, those guys! -
Trump-Putin Alaska summit ends without breakthrough on UkraineComments
Trump has repeatedly claimed that Russia’s invasion would have never happened on his watch. Putin sought to play to Trump’s ego during the press conference, saying that he agreed with the sentiment. Trump turned to Putin and nodded in assent.
So weird. -

It’s weird having your headphones turned to the max on a plane, and it not even sounding that loud. This is undoubtedly damaging my ears.Comments
Regular flyers (in addition to putting tons of carbon into the air) are probably ruining their hearing at an accelerated rate. Maybe if the noise cancelling headphones are really good, it’s not the case for people that have those.
OK, having said all that, I probably should shut off the Maiden. Once Revelations is over. -
The older I get, the less I want to look at a small phone screen. I now regularly send urls from my phone to my computer to read things in a more spacious environ. I wonder if this is connected to a subtle increase in farsightedness.Comments

In case you were wondering.Comments
Note: You can only use Personal Hotspot by sharing the cellular internet connection on your iPhone. You can’t connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network, and then share that network with another device.
I really appreciate that they directly stated that. What makes a search about whether or not you can do something take a long time is that companies tend to avoid saying what a product cannot do. So, you end up finding clue afte clue that people have trouble doing something, but no explicit word that you can’t. -

I was just thinking that, from a jobs perspective, the A.I. trend is worse than crypto. While a disconcerting number of companies ate up crypto, maybe around half of them skipped it. Every single tech company and many non-tech companies have committed to A.I., even if they don't know what that means.Comments

Meta is explicitly allowing eight-year-olds to have “sensual chats” with Meta A.I.Comments
To be extra clear, this isn’t some interpretation of their rules. *Their own documents* give an example of an eight-year-old that wants to have a sensual chat.
Can you imagine the people and process at Meta deciding, hey, this makes sense, let’s ship this?
Things are just unhinged in every possible way now. -

A new brain prosthesis can read out inner thoughts in real time, helping people with ALS and brain stem stroke communicate fast and comfortablyComments
Amazing. Could be wrong some of the time:The brain activation detected by these sensors is then fed into a machine-learning model to interpret which brain signals correspond to which sounds for an individual user. It then uses those data to predict which word the user is attempting to say.
Still, way better than nothing.
…
Using this new “inner speech” system, the participants needed only to think a sentence they wanted to say and it would appear on a screen in real time. While previous inner speech decoders were limited to only a handful of words, the new device allowed participants to draw from a dictionary of 125,000 words.
This, of course, could be used for evil:To ensure private thoughts remained private, the researchers implemented a code phrase: “chitty chitty bang bang.” When internally spoken by participants, this would prompt the BCI to start or stop transcribing.

I'm at war with robots!Comments
The Roomba keeps saying that its brushes need clearing and stopping, despite having been cleared. It's a "smart feature" that wasn't in older Roombas.
Our old Litter-Robot (the Litter-Robot II, which we had from 2014 to 2019) was good, but the Litter-Robot 3 we got in 2019 has constantly had problems, so we switched to a normal litter box, but kept the litter robot around as a supplement in the basement.
The Litter-Robot II had a step-on switch that started a timer to scoop the litter after a cat stepped on the entrance step and went in. It eventually broke but was very reliable.
The Litter-Robot 3 has a "cat sensor" that is so sensitive that it gets triggered by the litter robot itself when it is rotating its orb to scoop the litter. And so, it stopped in mid-rotation all the time, and I'd have to reset it.
A couple weeks ago, it stopped and would not go back to its normal position via resetting.
So, I contacted tech support via the chat widget on their site. I thought it would be quick, but I think they have the workers responding to multiple chats simultaneously. Every time I typed something, it took at least two minutes for a response.
In addition to that, they made me do stuff I already said I tried up front (per their script, probably), but I guess I have come to expect that from tech support these days.
In the end, the support worker concluded we had a faulty cat sensor and would give me one for 10% off. I said no, I will never give money to the Whisker company at this point. A few responses later (which took around ten minutes), they said they'd send it for free. How kind.
I was going to chuck the litter robot, but lately, Bonus Cat has been pissing in the tub. Why? It is a elder cat mystery, but one possibility is that he will no longer accept a non-pristine litter box, which would mean we'd have to scoop constantly. That's the one thing the old (Litter-Robot II) did, and so I am fighting technology for a chance at that happening again.
Similarly, the reason I am bothering to try to get past this Roomba nonsense instead of trashing it is that, while we have a small house and can vacuum it a couple of times a week manually, because of the cats, a daily vacuuming is really helpful.
So, in a way, I'm actually in a proxy war with cats. -
The Oka CrisisComments
The Oka Crisis (French: Crise d'Oka),[6][7][8] also known as the Mohawk Crisis[9] or Kanehsatà:ke Resistance (French: Résistance de Kanehsatà:ke),[1][10][11] was a land dispute between a group of Mohawk people and the town of Oka, Quebec, Canada, over plans to build a golf course on land known as "The Pines" which included an indigenous burial ground.
I can’t imagine the people in the US fighting for something important with that kind of dedication.
…
Around 8:30 the front-end loader rammed the barricade. Then armed police officers moved into the Pines,[29] and gunshots were fired from both sides.[43] Then the police retreated, abandoning six cruisers and the front-end loader.
Before the raid, there were approximately 30 armed Mohawk in and around the barricade; following the gun battle, this number grew to 60–70 and later grew to 600.[2] The Mohawks seized six vehicles, including four police cars, and commandeered the front-end loader to crush the vehicles and use them to form a new barricade across Route 344.[44] -

A research group at the University of Rhode Island’s AI lab has found that a medium-length response from GPT-5 consumes an average of 18 watt-hours. This is a substantial increase from previous models and places GPT-5 among the most energy-intensive AIs ever benchmarked. To put this into perspective, 18 watt-hours is enough to power an incandescent light bulb for 18 minutes.
And I don’t think people are making one request every eighteen minutes. - Comments

Our plumbing issue is fixed, and the water is back on.Comments
Of the things that make a house a house and not just a shelter, I think running water is second, next to heat. I’d rank it higher than electricity if it weren’t the case that our heat comes from electricity here.

Katt called at least six plumbers last night around 9 PM. Only one got back to us, and even that one has not committed to showing up.
