Shin-kicking, also known as shin diggings or purring, is a combat sport that involves two contestants attempting to kick each other on the shin in order to force their opponent to the ground. It has been described as an English martial art, and originated in England in the early 17th century.

Via Dan: Fox’s Kilmeade suggests killing the homeless, disabled and mentally ill with involuntary lethal injectionComments
Fox is the mainstream media at this point. It’s not even the most right-wing media. It’s also the only news source many people get.
Saying this is getting the idea out into the realm of normal so that later (and maybe not even that much later), it is an option for action, the way the ICE abductions are now. -
Vanishing Treasures on the ‘alalā, an endangered Hawaiian crow:Comments
Male 'alala, reared in cap-tivity, are more aggressive, prone to attack, and less likely to understand when their mates are making romantically encouraging gestures.
I wonder if they spend a lot of time online. -
Back workout, 2x5 slow deadlifts, 2x3 power cleans at 60 lbs. Now the most difficult part of the power clean for me is the finish. There's a bit of shoulder shock there.Comments
Overall, though, it's not the hardest workout, yet I somehow can't remember that before I start and am thinking of maybe putting off for a day. -

Once in a while, I think of playing a little poker. I don't want to play my friends. (That's why it's actually sort of nice to have acquaintances that are richer than you.)Comments
It turns out that the rake on 1/3 NL hold 'em at Encore (the closest poker room) is 10% up to $10. 10%!
I have not played regularly in a casino in about 20 years. Back then, I don't remember seeing a rake over 3%. My memory could be bad, but there's no way any of them were close to 10%. It looks like it is now in the range of normal now.
Just as well. It wouldn't actually be a good use of time to drive to and from Everett. And there's a good chance that the crowd would be sad and/or irritating, now that I recall. -

The workers’ flight was delayed on Wednesday after President Donald Trump made them a last-minute offer to remain in the US. But only one elected to stay, with many who returned to Korea vowing never to return to America.
Yeah. Why would anyone ever come to the US at this point? What would make it worth the risk of suddenly being detained under worse-than-prison conditions?“Trump should repent for his bad, unpredictable behaviour,” said Hong Jeong-sik, the 75-year-old leader of civic group Hwalbindan. “We are investing a huge amount of money in the US. But who will now invest there in this environment?”

They were OK when our cats were healthy and seeing Dr. Werlin, but now that she has left, and we find ourselves in more critical situations, the medical advice is worse, and they think nothing of costs.
They often contradict themselves. For example, they said that stressful situations could kill a cat with a heart condition and so we should never put him in any stressful situations. Then, they said we should take him to a cardiologist (outside their office) twice a year for monitoring. Those are by far the most stressful experiences he's ever been in.
Later, they prescribed him a medication in the form of pills that we were to split in half. We were to give him half at each meal.
After we ran out of the initial prescription, we wanted them to be delivered. They push people to order medication through Covetrus, rather than Chewy or anything else because they make more money that way (https://covetrus.com/covetrus-platform/prescription-management/online-pharmacy/). So, we tried that.
They would not approve the original prescription, and instead asked to buy tablets. They were adamant about that, but those actually were not available on Covetrus. Instead, they said we should get these compounded pills instead of splitting the original-sized pills. The compounded pills are eight times more expensive. We already pay a lot for three other cat medications and could use a break. When I asked to talk to the vet tech about this, the admin said they wouldn't talk to me.
In short, something is wrong there. They often don't agree with themselves, and they're not really there to work with you to care for your pet; they're there to get you out of the way. -

President Lee Jae Myung voiced strong concerns that a recent immigration raid on a Hyundai-LG electric vehicle battery plant construction site in Georgia could discourage South Korean companies from investing further in the United States.
I did think it seemed very unlikely that LG snuck in 300 people without papers.
The raid, which detained over 300 South Korean workers, raised alarm about visa complexities and uncertainty in business operations. Lee noted that many of the detained technicians had entered the US on short-term business visas to install equipment and train local staff, stressing that such roles are temporary and vital for project completion.
Generally, when business are afraid to invest in a country because a warlord’s personal forces may suddenly raid them despite the states law, that country is what some might call a “shithole country.” -

At least 19 people in two cities died on Monday in Nepal's worst unrest in decades, authorities said, as police in the capital of Kathmandu fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters trying to storm parliament in anger at a social media shutdown and corruption.
The next day:Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday as anti-corruption demonstrators defied an indefinite curfew and clashed with police, a day after 19 people died in violent protests triggered by a social media ban. Oli's government lifted the ban after protests intensified on Monday, with police firing tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters trying to storm parliament. Nineteen people were killed and more than 100 injured in the unrest.
In the U.S., we're not willing to be shot by rubber bullets or storm buildings (this includes me), let alone show up consistently at nonviolent protests. We're not going to outsmart our way out of authoritarianism, and I increasingly feel that by not being willing to sacrifice anything, we're going to end up losing way more than we want.
…
"In view of the adverse situation in the country, I have resigned effective today to facilitate the solution to the problem and to help resolve it politically in accordance with the constitution," Oli said in his resignation letter to President Ramchandra Paudel. -

Soft secessionComments
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey told MSNBC her state police would “absolutely not” help Trump’s deportation efforts. She’s not bluffing. In Printz v. United States (1997), Justice Scalia wrote that the federal government “cannot require states and localities to carry out its immigration policy.” The anti-commandeering doctrine, reinforced in Murphy v. NCAA (2018), means states can’t be forced to implement federal programs.
The legal foundation for soft secession was written by conservative justices who never imagined blue states would use it. -
Americans face biggest increase in health insurance costs in 15 yearsComments
One of the insurance companies, UnitedHealth, has cited tariffs from President Donald Trump’s trade wars as a reason for the increases.
Great. Looking forward to paying more for nothing.
The cost of companies’ health insurance plans for employees are expected to jump by an average of 6.5 per cent in 2026, the biggest increase in 15 years, according to a report by Mercer. For people who buy health insurance on government exchanges, the median increase for 2026 is 18 per cent — more than double last year’s 7 per cent rise, according to KFF, a non-profit health policy research group.
