Dan was talking about a weird election in the 1800s in which one of the parties (which won a state's electoral votes) was the Anti-Masonic Party. I just came across the
1872 election in which the Democratic candidate died after the popular vote was cast, but before the electoral votes were cast. The electors then proceeded to vote for four different Democratic candidates.
They had no chance anyway, but imagine that happening in the case in which the dead candidate won the popular vote. Chaos!
