After churning through a few skeuomorphic ideas that never got real enough to not look atrocious (tried to emulate a real
polyptych and
stained glass), I finally landed on a style for the polyptych view of Observatory that does not look boring but also does not make the content hard to read. Along the way, though, I learned that you can apply SVG-style filters (not feTurbulence, though) to arbitrary HTML elements and saw this
wacky but reliable hack for adding noise textures to HTML elements.
