I have several grievances with this kind of window:
- They don’t let in much air, presumably because of security, which I kind of get, but I’m not sure why breaking in through a basement window on the side of the house is any more stealthy than going through a first floor window on the back of the house, unless you’re planning a live invasion in which you’re getting in while people are awake and active in the house. And I don’t know why you’d do that unless you plan to murder instead of to burgle. Murder rate’s pretty low around here, so I have few concerns about that.
- The pane that opens on the inside is held in by two flat knobs, and it’s really easy for it to fall out completely.
- When it’s shut, there’s a single plastic pane besides it and the outside. I bet it’s drafty in the winter.
All that said, I bet it’s especially expensive to replace these windows because they have no frame, so I’ll probably just stuff a bunch of insulation in here in the winter.
