It was cold and cruddy out, and I was kinda tired, so I was tempted to skip judo. But I went, and I feel good now!
I did not go 100%. I did three rounds with a break in between each. But you know, I could have gone 0%.
I think I'm making a little progress with intentionally moving the fight in one direction or another. I'm not always successful, but at least I'm not completely unaware of where things are going.
I felt I had something of a breakthrough when drilling harai goshi. A sensei told me to simply not bend over. And it was way smoother, especially when practicing it while moving around. I was bending way over, like I was finishing seoinage, and it's just not necessary and messing up my initial rotation. I never noticed before: there's not that much bending in the
canonical form, nor even in
competition (if the opponent is standing upright; if they are bent over, you have to bend, too). That was a keen observation on his part.
Still, I couldn't make it happen in randori; it was all osotogari for me. But I have a start.
