The Bowman family was confronted by security for stealing six apples at Connors Farm in Danvers. Cambridge School Committee member Rev. Manikka Bowman and her husband Jeff Myers, describe what happened this weekend after they spent $100 to pick apples with their kids at Connors Farm and were headed to the farm store to pay for the six extra apples they discovered their kids had picked that were six too many for the bag they had: They were confronted by security and a manager who accused them of trying to steal the apples.
And then, when they asked for the owner's contact info, the manager called police.
Then, of course, the cop that came to the scene accused this Black family of “playing the race card” while they tried to explain their situation.
This family lives around here, and I have chatted with Jeff. They’re really friendly, and no, I do not think they need to have their children steal six apples.
This kind of thing makes me want to not visit apple orchards at all. I guess I don’t think they’re all that interesting in the first place, and totally not worth any potential harassment by racist staff.
