We read the Mount Doom part of Lord of the Rings for bedtime tonight. I didn’t realize that the trope in which destroying the Big Artifact causes all the evil buildings to immediately collapse and explode came from there.
Also, I still find it remarkable that for all the heroic archetypes in the story, ultimately, Tolkien makes a hideous accident a big factor in saving the world. He takes the story back to a feel that of old myths that preceded the idea that people were great and made everything happen.
