I had some newaza success at judo today. I was able to land an armbar, a triangle, a couple of pins, a choke from guard, and I held out for a fair bit of time (for me) against a black belt before getting choked.
I need to be able to play a high guard, like spider guard, though. Against better partners, I can't rotate to triangle or armbar attacks quickly enough. They always shut me down well before I get my leg up.
I also need to be able to switch sweep sides because I often try to sweep once, then when that fails, I'm stuck.
I think the most exciting development, though, is maybe I finally understand tai otoshi now that it was explained differently today? The critical obstacle for me is actually rotating the opponent. Connecting the forearm to the chest first, then turning makes it way easier for me than rotating them immediately upon gripping which is what the Tuesday senseis recommend. We'll see about this next randori, though.
