I'm very wary of animations in apps that are a waste of everyone's time, but sometimes, they help.
I added this transition to
Observatory because it was jarring when that filter panel just disappeared immediately as soon as you clicked a filter. I may change my mind about this later, but right now, even though the transition does take a second, it makes that interaction less bewildering.
