I was going to take a shower, but finally got tired of the upstairs bathroom door not latching. I had installed it too high back when we moved in, probably because installing it at the right height would mean that only one of the two screws could catch because someone had gouged an overly large recess behind the strike plate.
I moved it down and tried to glue a small piece of wood behind the screw that had no wood to catch behind it. Even if that worked, it would mean the glue, rather than the screw would be holding the strike plate to the door jamb. Then, I tried finding a longer screw, which I didn’t have.
In the end, I left the strike plate affixed by one screw. The door does latch, so we don’t have to honor system it. (Dr. Wily has no honor.)
The real problem is that door, like many of the doors in this place, is not hung plumb (that’s fancy talk for “vertically level”). Which we should fix. Someday.
